Il Pompino discontinued ! Why & how long ago ?

Post by pioneer »

Hi, anybody know please why and how long ago the Pompino was discontinued?
Tried to order one from Planet X and found out it’s all finished. Bugger!

A favourite of mine - a really good ride IMHO (54cm). I grumbled to them about their discontinuation (which I think they said was 2 years ago) - why would they discontinue a bike /frame that was clearly popular? It makes little sense to me, but maybe it's to replace with something else that makes us 'just buy a new one' or maybe the plot is to replace with something inferior, so that we are then led into buying something new on the next occassion with the promise that its better? Who knows? Maybe retailing these days has a conflict of interest between providing what the customer wants and the satisfaction of shareholders. :(

P-X are a business and they will only sell things that they make a profit on. Having sold lots of training bike frames in the last few years, pretty much everyone who wanted one already had one, so sales probably dropped off dramatically. Probably in a few year's time it will go full circle and they will come back again.

cheers

Thanks all. Will now review my possible bike list. The Charge Plug and a couple from Evans are on it. A Surly Steamroller would be nice, but now at silly money IMO.

I wanted one as well. On the STW forum a few weeks ago Brant Richards was on about what is in the pipeline from Planet X. Think there was a Pomp replacement.
Actually a Pompetamine would be even better. Disc brakes and track ends.

Didn't Genesis do a Day One?

yep, currently Day One 10 (singlespeed) or Day One 20 (8s Nexus premium) . Steel frame, disc brakes, sensible tyre widths fit OK. They also do their 'flyer' model which has rim brakes and smaller clearances. Both frames have had rear-facing dropouts for SS/IGH use, but IIRC the current flyer may not and the rear ends are not spaced the same as one another.

I had Genesis Day One. Sold it last Sept. Silly mistake! It had two sets of wheels. The standard and 26” with a Nexus 3 hub. A lovely bike and comfy, but quite heavy.

current flyer model has 28mm tyres, decent length mudguards and forward-facing dropouts mean that the rear brake stays in adjustment even as the wheel is moved to allow for chain wear. They don't say what OLN is used but it looks like 120mm which means a SA 3s hub will work too. Dunno if you can buy the frame only or not. Only fly in the ointment is the RRP. Same goes for Day One RRP I suppose.

Only for those who want disc brakes. If you want discs then there is plenty of choice, those of us who want callipers or cantis will be forced against our will eventually! :(

The Flyer is a fine looking bike to be sure. I wasn’t convinced about disc brakes until I had the Day One. I liked them, though in a crosswind, they caused a loud whistle.
Might consider another Day One, but really want a lighter weight singlespeed this time round. Did have a lovely Bob Jackson fixed wheel bike. But gave that to my son in Singapore.

FWIW if you are not very careful having disc brakes is liable to cost you about 0.5 to 1kg in weight.

IMHO if you are running fixed gear there isn't that much braking to be done anyway, so heavy wheels and brakes are doubly superfluous.

Good point about wheel weight Brucey. If I do it, it’ll only be a sunny day, occasional use bike anyway. And pick the route/miles with great care. Spinning along in East Anglia was a doddle. South Devon, not so much!

As an aside. It seems the big boys, Wiggle, Evans etc, have properly dropped singlespeed/fixed at long last. I suppose the storerooms must be full of gravel bikes.
