My New Bike

This is what I collected from St John Street Cycles in Bridgwater today


I rode it about ten miles to my daughter's house today. Tomorrow I have a 50 mile ride planned

I had a raven that is the same frame but with rohloff gearing. If you want a rugged tourer that just plods on you couldn't have picked a better bike.

Yes, it's a Sherpa. I'm really looking forward to doing some longer rides and camping trips. My wife is saying she'll never see me again

Nice bike, black and red go well together. Much better looking than the Thorn's with those sloping top tubes. Good choice.

Not sure why they always have so much exposed seatpost and stem, my bike has about half to a third of that. Any reason?

re exposed seat and handlebar tubes. Well if you are tall to have a much larger frame makes one that flexs rather - When I had a Dawes Horizon with 25" frame little old weak me could flex the frame. So tall people have to just put up with it if they want a frame that dont flex

Am aware that they have a brilliant reputation but I do see a lot around that do look damn odd to me.

Wasn't aware that they were always ridden by tall folk.

Eye of the beholder I suppose for unlike one poster above I prefer sloping top tubes - for practical (for me) reasons.

enjoy your bike richard - what are those bar ends? - they look interesting from what I can see here.

The frame is 'too small' (has many advantages) or rather: most normal frames are too big

well if you look at the smaller sizes it is much less pronounced in some cases?. I suppose if you want a larger frame you would need extra tubes to stop flexing? esp on a toruing bike carrying heavy loads

Raven/ Rohloff rider here.
Your bike looks great and comes from an excellent company.
My Raven has never let me down in the 6 countries I have toured in.

You might notice the stem is angled downwards, this allows the steerer to be left uncut until the rider has decided on the right position, reversing the stem would mean getting rid of a few spacers with the bars in the same position. Thorn also have a return policy (14 Days?) but you can't do that if the steerer has been cut.
A lot of riders will decide to leave it that long, but it isn't compulsory, my Raven started out looking like that and once I'd sorted the position it had no more spacers than my other bikes and looked like this

Thank you. I did a short ten mile ride after collecting it yesterday and have just returned from a 50 mile ride with my son. I enjoyed every minute of it, even the hills! It's the longest ride I have done for many years.
