Having since ridden out to have a look, it is rideable, except that there's a locked gate at the end of the tarmac at the north end, that you have to lift your bike over (which I did, having approached it from the south).

Did you not find a locked gate at the south end too?

there was a gate, but it had a deliberate looking gap beside it which I wheeled my bike through

I don't know if that wasn't there when I saw it or if I decided against it for some reason. I do remember the gate and path beyond it were very overgrown. Hopefully I'll get another chance to check it out before the summer's over.
