Re: One good reaon to wear a helmit
I was attacked by a buzzard in North Devon back in 2005. I was wearing a helmet ...................... thank goodness.

A Tilley would be equally effective!

That's a fun way to spell helmit, but I think I prefer Bryn's helmut.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Someone would first need to tell me what's so good about a Tilley hat that they cost £70

I've got two.
One a summer hat - washable, has vents in the sides, brown natural hemp.
The other, a winter hat - dark grey felt wool, has a warm flap to lower over the back of the neck, waterproof. Dryclean only.

Bought mine far cheaper than that, from Cotswolds Outdoor in Plymouth.
Excellent hats and worth the money. Guaranteed for life and insured against loss.
Mrs Mick F has one.

And, Tilleys can apparently pass through elephants without damage!
Heres mine, 'The Rogue' purchased in South Africa. It pushes flat so you can slip it in your luggage easily, brilliant idea.

I got my T3 Wanderer in a "last year's colour" sale earlier this year for £28. My Ultimate (US Tilley-a-like) is still going strong after over 20 years, but not enough washing has left it looking rather manky from sweat staining.
£70 is a lot for a hat, but they are very good. Especially if, like me, you're a peely-wally slaphead and spend a lot of time outside. It keeps off the sun and rain, it's comfortable, the fore-and after strap is remarkably effective at keeping it on in high winds and you'll spread the cost over decades. Better on foot or boat than for cycling, granted, but I do enough of both to justify a good wide brim sun/rain hat.
My sister travels a lot and has had a T5 for years as part of her "useful almost anywhere" wardrobe. They're pretty indestructible and work well.

I have a wide brimmed Billabong sun hat that's similar to a cricketer's hat,in a light green colour,it's at least twenty years old,I think I paid £15 for it and it does a good job in hot weather on or off the bike
I don't doubt the quality of Tilley hats and TBH if I could find one at half the £70 price tag I've seen them priced at I'd more than likely buy one,but the full price is a bit seep for me.

Entirely reasonable. As noted above, I got mine for less than half price direct from Tilley in a sale I saw advertised online, so it does happen.

Re: One good reaon to wear a helmit
One aspect of the Tilley price is the guarantee. I've worn out one with a hole in fabric after a dozen years or so. A phone call, a photo emailed to the company, and a new one was sent to replace it. So I have new one which will last a dozen years or more, and if it wears out, that will get replaced again.
The replacement method is to put a big marker-pen marking on the label inside, then its up to you what happens next: landfill or re-use. A cotton fabric patch, and I have a gardening hat from the old one, plus my nice new one.
I find mine is OK on a bike, but it depends on your speed of riding. Touring of 10-12mph moving average is fine. 15mph average and less good as a hat choice. Racing clearly the wrong choice as all racers must ride with brightly coloured hats with advertising on them - be it cotton or polystyrene.
