** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Labour/Tory coalition isn't unheard-of. Happened in the 1930s...
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.

But that was in a deep economic depression.
Oh, I see what you mean.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

I wonder if Boris can get his place in history by beating George Canning to be the shortest serving prime minister?
Although I expect even he would struggle to beat Lord Bath.
(Both quotes from here.)
... the Prime Minister with the total shortest period in office was George Canning, whose sole term lasted 119 days from 12 April 1827 until his death on 8 August 1827.
Although I expect even he would struggle to beat Lord Bath.
The shortest ever period was only three days, a record held by Lord Bath, from 10 February to 12 February 1746, who was asked to form a government but was unable to find more than one person who would agree to serve in his cabinet.

Mr Farage is not an MP. Nor does he lead the largest party in the house.
Those things can change. Boris needs to perform, and quickly.

I need a raised eyebrow emoji
What things could legally change that would put Farage in number 10?

Boris is outclassed and hamstrung.
He is neither capable or able to do anything.
Come Oct when nothing has happened what then? No point bringing in another PM, or even having a general election based on what's happening.
Even if by some miracle Farage became PM he'd still have the same problems and there'd be more than enough Lab/Con/Lib/Green/SNP etc mp's to block anything he tried to do.
My advice? Buy some popcorn before it sells out, sit back and watch the entertainment.
Maybe just maybe, BoJo has something up his sleeve but if he has then he's done a good job hiding his competence for this long.

The mind boggles.
What kind of performance do you have in mind?

Thanks.roubaixtuesday wrote:Mick F wrote:Maybe someone more learned than us will know what the protocol involved is.
I seem to remember being told that a past monarch - probably Victoria at a guess was the last one to refuse the leader the PM-ship.Appointment of the Prime Minister
28. Currently, when a Prime Minister resigns, he or she advises the Queen on whom she should appoint as the next Prime Minister. The established convention seems to be that the Monarch is not obliged to take the advice of the outgoing Prime Minister, and may take advice from other sources, although if the resignation of a Prime Minister follows a general election in which another party has won a single majority in the Commons, there will be in practice no question about who should become the new Prime Minister. This person is then asked by the Monarch to form a government. An alternative to this arrangement would be to introduce an investiture vote.
From the parliamentary committee report into the formation of the coalition government in 2010

Note that all of this is unwritten convention rather than formal rules.
So it's not a foregone conclusion then, though it is odds-on that she will approve him.

Brexit by Oct 31. What else? If possible I'd like it backdated to 24/6/16 so we can send Brussels a bill for all the cash we've sent there since then.

And Farage et al can send back all the cash they received. And the farmers. And communities all around the UK.

Sure, but by what performance?
Perhaps through the medium of dance?

So another charlatan gets his grubby hands on the levers of power. The mess he now has to clean up is, appropriately, his own.
We will watch him taking back control, securing borders and spending unimaginable sums on the NHS.
