Best £1000 gravel bike ?

Looking to buy my first gravel specific bike having used a hybrid with gravel tyres.
Got a grand to spend, lots of options, recommendations much appreciated

Go and ask on the Facebook gravel group page. It's not that people here won't know, and you'll get lots of technical opinions here, but you would be targeting a captive audience and avoiding those who will question either the need or definition of such a bike.
Briefly look at the British companies for good value. Planet X, Merlin, Boardman or Chain Reaction.

Been told to avoid anything from Boardman due to poor Chinese QA issues and failures of frame and forks?
Every big name seems to do a 1k model just wondered if there was one stand out amongst them

Not them, but I did talk quite extensively to them a couple of years ago and they left a (lasting, clearly!) positive impression, as do the Alpkit products I own.

I suppose the OP could buy from a huge corporate behemoth, too, as opposed to a smaller, more flexible, service-oriented plucky Brit company. I may have slightly over-egged that, but I do think they are very good and deserve support, if their product suits the buyer

The problem being whilst my legs may be like a racehorse after some fashion,these days they perform more like a carthorse

You might want to take a look at the Jamis renegade expat
Marketted as an adventure bike. I find it's good for light off road use, audax and touring.
Possible towards the heavier end of the weight range for this type of bike

I'll bet you that Boardman are no different to anything else. At this price its all coming out of a Chinese factory and they all have much the same bits. Local back up, the gear manufacturer, and colour will probably be more crucial.

Totally take your point on the China thing I guess at the lower price point it's much of a muchness. I think the whole Halfords having poor mechanics setting up bikes also plays into factoring however my local town has a couple of shops who I'm sure would do a comprehensive check for peace of mind.

They also have lots of porn (titanium) to drool over and to set ambitions of an upgrade towards also

Just brought a Boardman Adventure 8.9 from Halfords and really pleased with it. I had wanted something lighter but given the discount my grandson got working there part time I dont mind it being a bit heavier.
Rides well and the wheels don't feel excessively heavy. Saddle supplied is a Fizik which I normally get along with but I fitted one I had already,
Gearing seems to suit me but I haven't ventured very far off road yet.
Not impressed with the two bolt seat post so I have ordered another but for the money I think its a good buy.
