This wonderful, beautiful fluff ball came in through the bathroom window

I KNOW you are not supposed to handle without gloves but I just HAD to pick it up and remove the net curtain from the window and place it on the sill to be able to get back out, only 3-4", isn't some of nature wonderful

I love being autistic, I believe it has made me truly love all animals in a way many don't or can not

They flap their wings producing a down force equal or greater than their mass.

We seem to have a lot more bats than we used to.
When I first moved into the house 4 years ago you'd frequently see one but very rarely two in the air together. Now you often see 3 or 4 together (never seen five yet).

Gorgeous (maybe not the right word) creatures.
We used to have a maternity roost in our back porch and when my parents came to visit they used to sit in the conservatory, counting them out. The most we had was around 15. Sadly they don't use it now, but we still have them flying all around the house on summer evenings.
Mrs.Copy has even got a Bat detector, to try and differentiate the various species.

I think many of this parish are on the spectrum at least, +1?! I can get on with people but dislike crowds

But what about people who are more abnormal? Most foetuses with downs syndrome are aborted but downs children can be happy and useful members of society

Any opinions or experiences? There is a group near me for downs children and their families, I am going to the group meeting soon to find out more

A bat was caught by an eagle
'You may not eat me, for, like you, I am a bird', it bleated
'So you are!', said the eagle, and let the bat go
..
Later a rat caught the bat
'You may not eat me, for, like you, I am a rodent', it squealed
'So you are!', said the rat, and let it go

Hi,
Bats don't have feathers that are made to lock on down force.

So explain how flapping up and down keeps them up?

Why do they need feathers? They're not birds.
A birds wing runs along their arm, bats wings are skin stretched between their fingers - they didn't have a common flying ancestor, both evolved flight separately.

That distinction is pretty important in the way the two animals can modify the wing shape. They both fly by changing their geometry of their wings between the upstroke and downstroke but bats do it using their hands/fingers.
Because of this they have a lot of control over the shape of the wing which makes them very manoeuvrable. They're not very good gliders though - although whether that's simply because gliding isn't much use for a bat and thus evolution didn't bother too hard or whether its intrinsic in the 'design' I don't know.

Loads of slow motion flying bat footage on YouTube which makes it obvious what's going on.

You could also ask how swimmers move forward in the water by moving their arms back and forth... ;)

Hi,
OK I found it.
But there is little on the subject, considering they are the only flight animal without feathers that fly today.
Its as I imagined it would fly, just could not track down the info.

Isn't a "Flying Fox" a bat?
And they're good gliders, although obviously have various modifications to cope.
I must admit I've never heard them called beautiful fluff balls before.

An interesting snippet.
Feathers predate birds. Whatever they originally evolved for it wasn't flying, classic case of evolution taking something that already exists and playing with it.

Oh and another snippet.
Birds didn't evolve from pterodactyls, they (pterodactyls) had yet another wing structure where the wing was supported by an extended finger.
This means flight evolved at least three times, each time having a different mechanism to achieve it.

That's a point, fruit bats. My brain is stuck in the insect chasing variety.

Hi,
Or even a flying fish :P
I keep thinking of early man made flying machines with umbreller wings that were pumped up and down.
Plenty of gliders adapted to flight, but are there any others that fly?

I was on a tourist boat in the Caribbean and a girl turned to her friend and said "that bird has gone in the water and not come out".
When I told her it was a flying fish, she did the Peter Kay garlic bread sketch.

"A flying fish?"
"A flying" <long pause> "fish?"
?
(I was so tempted to add "I've tasted them, they're the future").

She was astounded. Telling her they didn't really fly but glided would probably have been too much.

Mind you I was relating this story to a guy at work and he said "you'd think by now they'd have evolved to keep flying".
So I had to point out that being fish they breath under water...
