Vintage Bicycle Advertisements; good, bad. ugly...

this is dated dec 1918 and must have gone to press mere days before the end of WW1 was announced. I don't remember seeing an advertisement for something where they show you happy folk with the product and in the same breath tell you that you probably can't have one.....

except that they appear to be, uh, 'riding' Monark Silver King 'Flo-Cycle' bicycles. Produced before WWII they had rear suspension (of a kind) and aluminium frames. Its not clear to me if the springing is mostly in the thing immediately behind the BB or if it is shared with the seatstays. Either way this arrangement looks perfectly horrible; this floating thing probably deserved to be flushed down the toilet of history without a trace.

Royal Enfield Bicycle ............... made like a gun.

BSA = Birmingham Small Arms.

Come to think of it Bell Helmets are alleged to be part of a group in the arms industry in America.

I think it is spot-on too; either full sized in a very large room or (say) A2 or A3 sized in a smaller room.

I'd never heard of SICCEA or the 'multiplicateur' gearing before I saw this poster (circa 1920 ?) and TBH I am little more the wiser now. It looks like it might be an expanding chainwheel or planetary gear device or something, mounted on the chainstay so that a standard crankset can be used; this might allow an industrial gearing unit to be used. It make sense that they would try something like this, in a country that (then and now) seems to be 100% allergic to hub gears...
