Brake squeel just an annoying noise or more?

Post by Sweep »

Recently fiddled with some V brakes when changing pads~inserts.
Was too lazy to bother toeing in.
Not over surprised to see/hear that they squeel a bit, though it soon stops on each brake application.
Yes it's ever so slightly irritating, tho is handy for alerting pedestrians.
But does it indicate any brake efficiency issues (or any other practical issues) beyond the very slightly irritwting noise?

in most cases squealing brakes work less well than they should. The squealing is accompanied by small but vigorous movements elsewhere in the brake, e.g. in the bushings, so I'd expect those to wear a bit faster in a brake that squeals too.

cheers

Ta brucey, and i suspect you've sorted my spelling as well.
Yes i did have the idea that it indicated small backwards and forwards movements in the brake assembly.
Would you bother trying to correct it, or with the pads (actually inserts) now a bit worn in gawd knows what pattern, would you just leave until the next insert change?

The noise is what kept MAFriensAwfulCacaphonie in business for years.

Toe-in, innit? I've been toeing-in my blocks (do they still call them that?) for ever: they're always quiet.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

Encouraged/ticked off by Brucey have re-adjusted.
Will see how things go when I can get out on the bike.
It also meant that after years of having the thing I finally figured out how to use my Park third/fourth hand (never figured out the name for it either) tool.

So win win.

Took it for a ride eventually, and in less than perfect weather as well.

All perfectly quiet. And good braking.
Thanks for the nudge brucey.
Lesson learned.
If a job's worth doing it's worth doing well and properly.
