Where is this?

Post by foxyrider »

I recently discovered some photographs of my grandfather and his friends in the Middlesborough CTC taken in the 1930's. I'm trying to identify where some of these were taken with the aim of returning to these places with my grandson, maybe recreate some of them. I doubt very much whether anyone in the pictures is still alive and I don't know who anyone except my GF is anyway, to ask. However, some have some pretty distinct backgrounds that locals may recognise - most of their rides were out into Richmondshire / South Durham / the NYM's.

First up is this one

2019-08-09_175659crop.jpg

The dour chap to the left is my grandfather 'Bill' Bailey from Ormesby, they are at The Singing Kettle, the small square sign underneath is a United bus stop, to the left is possibly an RAC recommended sign. But where was The Singing Kettle? Do you recognise the scarp behind?

The collection, about 30 prints, offers a nice 'snapshot' of inter-war cycling, grass track racing, time trialling, road racing, trips to the beach, down to York, fixing punctures - well it looks like they had a fun time! Its quite possible that one of those in the pictures is the father of 'Super Sid' Barras, apparently the pair were friends/adversaries on two wheels.

Any help gratefully received :D

Could be Lloc in North Wales.
There was a Singing Kettle pub there ............... I Googled it and found a Francis Frith photo.

I shall follow this thread with interest.
My parents, both dead, were Stockton Wheelers and Thornaby club. My Uncle John, alive and 88 next month was also in the clubs I can query via my cousin.

Most definitely not Wales Mick, United didn't run that far away from their North Yorks homeland and neither did my GF :D

I am going to take a wild stab in the dark, based on the visible geography and say trans-Pennine. Somewhere like Hexham or Barnard Castle area. I have a hazy childhood memory of travelling from Teesside to The Lakes or thereabouts and passing somewhere with a name like that in the middle of nowhere.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Old trade directories may help, if you know which area to start looking at. Many can now be found online

I will have a look through my copy of a Jackson's Cyclist guide to Yorkshire . It was printed in 1900 . It has a very detailed list of routes and places of interests . This will take a while .

Looks quite Teesdale-ish to me.

Is it the remnants of ploughed snow at the roadside?
Would suggest higher up. An inn on a pass?

I thought it was limestone edging the road which would suggest the dales?

They're hardly dressed for it but, there again, they are from the north east

It looks like white-washed stones to show car drivers where the edge of the car park is.

Initially I thought of snow too - but there’s no sign of snow at the foot of hedges/dykes on the hillside, so I think the photo does shows white (painted?) stones edging the car park as suggested.
No idea of the location I’m afraid but is there maybe an archived ‘recommended cafes’ CTC guidebook from the right era?
