Presumably monkeys and parrots together had some cultural significance (in the U.S. ?) that is lost on a modern audience?

the logic is that there must be smoke contained within Lucas parts, and that this smoke must be essential for their proper function, for when it escapes, the parts soon stop working. Thus you can now buy replacement smoke, just to be sure you don't run out of this vital commodity.

I know nothing about 'Cosmos' cycles, but their poster was interesting

both the Cosmos and Raleigh images attempt to show speed in motion as it were; this was a relatively new approach to graphic style

Quite possibly influenced by boccioni. (And some of the other italian futurists)
