Would it be possible to accelerate to such speeds behind a car-borne wind shield but without a tow, from a standing start?
It seems unlikely to me, and even if possible it would surely take a considerable distance.
The gearing would be interesting.
Racing behind a motor vehicle like a Derny and in the Bordeaux-Paris has been long accepted.
I am not trying to excuse the cheating, but cheating perhaps requires intent to deceive. There was no such intent here.
Whether or not it was cycling rather depends on how you want to define cycling.
It was certainly an interesting, brave and athletic enterprise.

I imagine the gear needed to pedal at 184 mph would be so big that it would be impossible to get it turning from a stop.

For me it would simply be a matter of reaching 90rpm in top gear* (about 20mph) and then winding it up to 847rpm .

*By the standards of many my tourer is under-geared.

I read that he was released from the tow as he passed the gate, presumably at 174 mph. This is very different from accelerating from a 50 mph release.

I guess the lady in AMerica wa stowed up to 50mph because that was the minimum speed for her to pedal the huge gear.

The airlines can probably accommodate you. I've seen a couple of Facebook pleas from folk who've flown to PBP: "Anyone got a spare bike? Airline b0rked mine". And one simply lost.

It says 110 mph in the video , the article says 50.
Still doesn't take anything away from her compared to the other attempt. She still built up another 74 mph by her own efforts and held 184 through a measured mile. The other guy was measured over just 200 metres and was 10 mph slower.
