Sorry to hear about the crash, and glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.

In addition to tracking expenses as eileithyia says, talk to your employer and encourage them to request recompense from the driver / insurance (when they are found). They have, afterall, lost a week's worth of your work. I've known of an employer to ask for recompense, not just for the lost work, but also administrative fees, and a return-to-work assessment.

Get well soon, I got hit from behind in January 2015 and was off work for 5 weeks. There was a wing mirror left at the scene, it was from a silver astra but the police never traced him.
As soon as you get a police incident number you can make a claim from the MIB They only pay out for personal injury not damage to your bike. All appointments for MRI scans etc are made for weekends. Took about 12 months and I received £12,300. I never got a solicitor involved.

I don't belive that is correct. Subject to certain provisos you can claim for property damage caused by an untraced driver. Unfortunately there is some inconsistancy between what the MIB states those provisos are on its website (see Q8 on https://www.mib.org.uk/making-a-claim/faqs/), and the legal agreement between the MIB and the Government, which states on page 6 that 3 sessions or more of hospital out-patient treatment are sufficient to qualify as 'Significant Personal Injury' and so meet the threshold for property damage also being covered subject to a £300 excess.

Well they wouldn't pay out for damage to my bike.
New mudguards, new chainset (pedal pulled out of crank), new rear mech and hanger. All tiagra and came to £120.
I got taken by ambulance to hospital but had to go back the next day as I thought my ankle was broken but luckily it was okay!
The police had cctv footage of me and the car shortly before it happened but they couldn't read the numberplate!!!

All the best for a speedy recovery & let's hope the driver is tracked down & fully punished.

I hope you are feeling better a few days on and you make a full recovery.

I hope the police catch the scum that did this to you. But in reality they might well not. Case closed. Even if they do the driver may well be uninsured, unlicensed, disqualified, etc. or on the slim chance he ever gets before a court, given a pathetically lenient sentence or even get off altogether SMIDSY.

I have like you been hit and run. The leaving for dead some one by the side of the road still haunts me even though my injuries have long healed.

It sounds like your injuries might be significant if you lost consciousness, required stitches so may be worth contacting a solicitor that specialises in cycling personal injury RTA cases. I you are a member of the main cycling organisations such as BC or CyclingUK contact them for advice from their preferred solicitors.

I didn't bother with a solicitor, I don't reckon you need one to deal with the MIB. I got hit by a caravan in 1991 and the driver was prosecuted for dangerous driving, I used a solicitor then as the claim was against an insurance company.

I worked in IT for Jaguar and part of the work involved recording part serial numbers. There is a decent chance that a substantial assembly like a wing mirror would be recorded but not 100%. Jaguar was part of Ford up to 2010 and I know their systems were similar, in fact they used some of my vehicle data recording software.... Of course the part could have been replaced due to a previous incident in which case there would be no link to the vehicle.

Hope they get him.

Bit of an update. I’ve recently swapped jobs. I was struggling a bit with my knee as the job I was doing involved very heavy lifting. While I was off sick, I applied for a few jobs and from the offers I received, I’ve accepted a HGV driving job at Jewson Civils. Better hours, no Saturdays, and a lot less lifting,

Police informed me there’s no chance of a prosecution, as they definitely can’t prove the driver they nicked was driving on the day I was hit.

I’ve put a claim in with M.I.B (thanks to advice from forum members) and I’ve had a medical, and a representative for M.I.B came to the house and took a formal statement, along with pictures, receipts, etc etc. I’m hoping to recover the cost of repair ( just over £250 for new forks, cables, and control unit. ) The bike is as good as new, and if I get some injury compensation on top, then I guess I’ll put it towards a holiday! I must’ve paid in thousands over the years for car and motorbike insurance!

The limp has gone, but after going for a 25 minute jog with my 12 year old Son last week, I’ve realised it’s going to take a few months before I’m back to (hopefully) approaching full fitness. I’ve done a 6 mile ride, but don’t think I could comfortably do much more. My previous job was 13 miles to work, which I did with no problem, but as my new job is only 3 miles away, I should be able to manage it when I start in a week or two.

I’m still really pi553d off that the scumbag who took me out has got away with it, and can only hope that Mr Karma comes knocking at his door one day soon.

All in all, I realise I was very lucky to not being more seriously hurt, and it won’t stop me cycling to work!

Sorry to hear of your accident. This is the reason I often wear a helmet camera, which I highly recommend using . I've had 2 hits by cars this years, one was a hit and run. I dealt with British Cycling insurance (legal cover) the driver decided not to respond to his insurance company or the police. When the video evidence was handed to their insurance company they accepted full responsibility (paid out in full) and the police are pursuing and prosecuting.

glad you're on the mend!

It's amazing that despite incidents like this:

Glad to hear you've got things moving with the MIB, I just keep to the lanes now and after taking part in the 'Ride for Joe' in July at Wolverhampton wheelers I noticed how many riders have daytime flashing lights. I bought some Exposure trace ones and I'm convinced they do make a difference with cars.
Hope you get a decent settlement, mine was £12,300.

What about his mates? Witnesses? CCTV somewhere the vehicle was (petrol station on the A19)? etc? Some of the other drivers had cameras. Did they even check? Was the car damaged? Can they prosecute for not naming the driver?

It's obviously too late, now for CCTV, but if they didn't check, they have failed the investigation.

Can't get away with speeding using that excuse but it's ok for careless/ dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident?

So, a quick update. I'm back to 99% fitness, and was able to start running again. Being on furlough for 8 weeks, I started gradually and managed to work up to the 10k runs I did many years ago, though not as quick and the knee did ache the day after. Update re the claim, MIB sent me an offer of a smidgen over £4k, which I'm happy with and have accepted. I'm left with a permanant scar, but I'm back to being confident cycling again, which took a while. Just wanted to thank everyone for their concerns an well wishes, and also to the people who suggested MIB in the first place as I had no idea, and probably wouldn't have pursued a claim! So I now have a large deposit towards the motorbike I've been lusting after! Thanks again everyone, Carl.
