Cycle clips v rubber bands
Rubber bands double as good cycle clips. When not in use roll them down to your socks and you can't lose them. Saves space.

Don't forget the Tesco plastic bags in wet weather, Oh an a spare for the saddle
Well that's what I was doing 45 years ago

They don’t tend to last long. Instead I use Velcro, bought a meter of hooks and eyes about five years ago for £1.50 and even with a few bits lost I’m not half way through it.

Hi,
TBH, I always tucked my jeans into my yellow / green fluorescent fluffy socks, no need for lack bands.
The plastic bags worked well before the advent of shoe covers, I made them (shoe covers) before you could buy them, not sure when shoe covers came into being.
Still modifying shoe covers today on the sewing machine.

I have a near daily supply of bands. The postie drops them outside my gate!

I just tuck my pants legs in my socks

A length to inner tube. If you just tie it in a single knot (half a reef knot) and pull it moderately tight, friction will stop it coming loose. Might come apart in the rain, though, in which case clothes pegs are a good alternative*. Or you could finish off the reef knot.

I used to use the metal sprung types that were common years ago but I found that I was forever bending them in an attempt to get them to work/fit without irritating my shins (but never managed it). I preferred elastic bands to tucking my trousers into my socks but now, if I need to use anything, I use those hi-viz plastic-coated metal strips that roll up by themselves (I don't know what they're called) - very efficient and very comfortable.

I know this place is distinctly "old school" and not one for passing fads when to-hand stuff can be just as good (which I like) , but am wondering if the original post was a wind-up - elastic bands hardly easy to get on.
So, these:

I think these are the ones with the longer velcro bit - some have a short bit which is a problem.
The perfect companion for the sadly departed M&S chinos.

I've had more than one nasty crack on the knuckles from those things. Still, they are good. I have a green one & need a red one to have port & starboard. Green to green and red to red... but mind the truck all the same. I suppose the Ass says they have to be yellow, though.

I bought my first overshoes in 1980 (Sidi wellies - you could get them ankle or knee height, I had the longer ones) although i'm pretty sure they were about before that
Convention? what's that then?

They look good with elastic, cheap enough to buy some for spares.
On shoe covers I was still using plastic bags and elastic bands in early seventies. made first covers mid seventies, I never saw covers (spats?) for sale. probably half my weekly £15 earnings

A cheaper alternative is to tuck the trousers in the socks?

Or no trousers?
Seriously
In my youth I found rubber bands wouldn't stay where they were put.
If I do ride in flappy trousers (I am a child of the Flares era) I use yellow velcro jobbies that can be adjusted to suitable grip.
