8 speed rear mech running a nine speed cassette?

Post by Trikeyohreilly »

Hi. Finally snapped my low hanging rear mech. 36 tooth cassette on a 20 inch wheel was asking for it and it lasted a good while so not unhappy. Early close to touring holiday not so good. So I'm thinking of trying a 34 cassette for a while as my legs are stronger now and it will give better ground clearance I believe.

I have a rear mech that will take 34 teeth but it's only 8 speed while the cassette is 9. I realise this wouldn't work with most gear shifters but I run bar end shifters on friction so I'm wondering if it might?

Thank you.

8 speed RD will work with 9 speed cassette. If it's a Shimano setup 8 speed will also work with 9 speed STI shifters.
You'll never know if you don't try it.
