Mudguard Sizing

Post by timmitchell »

I have snapped my rear mudguard on my Genesis TDF 20 commuter / touring bike

Looking at them online I can't work out the size I need. They tyres are 35mm.....but I measure the rear guard as being 600 mm, obviously this accounts for the curve.

So would I need a

28"/700c X 35mm or x 600? I can't actually find either size.

Can you post a link if you have one as I have confused myself :D

Sizing is to do with your tyre size.
Assuming you are running 700x38 tyres then you’d be looking for a 700x42 mudguard to cover the tyre.

I'd be going for minimum 45mm width SKS/Bluemels mudguards.

Yeah, you want the mudguard to be at least 10mm wider than the tyre. Anything less and you get rather more spray than desirable coming out the sides of the guard when riding in wet conditions.

TBH IMO with 35 to 37mm actual size tyre I prefer SKS P53's but I do ride some mucky tracks, towpaths and bridleways,I also like tovhave a long 60mm wide mudflap on the front that reaches to within 40mm of the ground,I make these from an old car or truck inner tube.

Hi all, one point missed must surely be the width of the fork crown/seat stays? looks good with the mud-guard filling the fork gap :) . MM

+1 to this and the mudflap. I have some 45's on one bike and although they clear the 35mm tyre OK it doesn't take much mud to build up and start rubbing, even on road if it's mucky winter lanes. The 53's on the same tyre don't have this issue as often and I like the finish of the current black Bluemels Mat model.

I'm happy with 45 mm and the 35/37 mm Hypers. That said I don't do much muddy with this bike. I did try them out with 42 mm but the stay fixings were just too close to the edge of the tyre. I might try this bike with 35 mm Marathons for the somewhat muddy shopping runs this winter, if so I'll see......

I'm really not sure there is a consistent method of mudguard sizing across manufacturers. Perhaps ISO or ETRTO need to have a look at it, now they've finally got everyone using a consistent method of tyre and rim sizing. Oh, hang on...
