Unbelievable... Times - Labour party survey

Post by al_yrpal »

From today's The Times...

Labour Party members want to sack the Queen, abolish Britain’s borders and the nuclear deterrent, and support a general strike to bring down the government.

They also blame Britain, rather than the IRA, for terrorist attacks in Northern Ireland and dislike the national anthem, according to a poll that reveals the prevalence of extremist views in Labour ranks.

Most of the 1,100 members surveyed by YouGov believe the antisemitism crisis that has ripped the party apart is mostly the fault of the media or Jeremy Corbyn’s opponents.

Just 15% are “proud” of Britain’s history, with 43% saying they are “ashamed”. Only 29% believe in retaining the monarchy, while 62% say that Britain should become a republic.

Fear and self loathing in the labour party. Love it!

As a counter I listened to the gen sec of GMB this morning on radio 4. The first time I've listened to a union guy and thought he made sense! A revelation that was for me but don't expect me to start supporting unions! It's not made that much of a change.

Well the Tory 160,000 are just as bad in the other direction?

It would be a funny news worthy event seeing the queen given her P45  and the princes onto Universal Credit at the local job centre. Hmm , what job applications have you made this month

I guess you did not listen to David Spiegelhalter on the wireless yesterday. He pointed out that you should always check who commissioned a survey when assessing it.

I'd love to see those survey questions...

You mean, these survey questions:

Did the survey ask,
"Do you think the Queen should be sacked?"
or,
"Should Britain be a republic, like many other countries?"

I'd be interested to see the actual questions and responses - got a link?

The Jewish Chronicle has a non-paywalled summary

https://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/youg ... y-1.489039

It seems clear that some Labour members are blind to the dangers of opposition to both Israeli policies and financial institutions either deliberately being used by antisemites or probably more likely inadvertently morphing into antisemitic. Opposition to Israeli policy per se is not in the least antisemitic.

Labour, of course is not alone - the Tory party very clearly has a far worse problem with islamophobia. Imagine what would happen if Jeremy Corbyn mocked traditional Jewish dress in the way Boris Johnson has Islamic dress.

A lot of the rest seems fine to me, or subject to interpretation. Opposing hereditary privilege and weapons of mass destruction should not be seen as extreme in any way IMO, whether you agree with it or not.

Or "Should our head of state be democratically elected" perhaps, or maybe

"Do you agree it is wrong for people's jobs to be determined by who their parents are?"

Have you read The Queen and I by Sue Townsend?

The Queen and I is the brilliantly funny novel by Sue Townsend, author of the Adrian Mole series.

THE MONARCHY HAS BEEN DISMANTLED

When a Republican party wins the General Election, their first act in power is to strip the royal family of their assets and titles and send them to live on a housing estate in the Midlands.

If you actually look at the quoted report (I don't have a link so just the bit Al quoted)
Labour Party members.....
Presumably this does not mean "all members" so it must mean "some members" which could mean anything from 2 members to 99% of the membership. Vague to the point of not being useful.

Labour Party members want to sack the Queen, abolish Britain’s borders and the nuclear deterrent, and support a general strike to bring down the government.
I agree with getting rid of the Queen, I agree with getting rid of Britain's borders (as in we should join Schengen) and does the "general strike to bring to government down" refer to a general strike or bringing the government down (ending Conservative dictatorship has got to be a good idea though in some respects Johnson has already ended any Parliamentary power by closing it down).

.....Most of the 1,100 members surveyed by YouGov believe the antisemitism crisis that has ripped the party apart is mostly the fault of the media or Jeremy Corbyn’s opponents.....
Assuming they are referring to the antisemitism in the Labour Party and not in the country as a whole, there is a good argument that it [the crisis] is caused by Corbyn. Not that Corbyn has caused any antisemitism but rather it is only a crisis because Labour has been so ineffectual is sorting the issues out and Corbyn seems to have been prime mover in being vague, evasive, avoiding, etc. (plus he's leader and should maybe have learnt to lead by now).

Just 15% are “proud” of Britain’s history, with 43% saying they are “ashamed”. Only 29% believe in retaining the monarchy, while 62% say that Britain should become a republic.
Britain's history is a pretty bit thing to hold a single opinion about. There are certainly some pretty significant aspects to Britain's past that I'm "ashamed" about (including recent history). And what is so scandalous about wanting the UK to be a republic - I want that and I don't regard myself as an extremist.

BUT I am absolutely sure that ask a set of daft questions to Conservative Party membership and you'd get a set of much dafter answers (just look at who they recently voted to be PM - got to be an indication ...)

Ian
ps I don't think I understand enough about NI background and history to make any argument about the poll results about the causes of the troubles - but how relevant that is depends as to it being a view held by 2 members or 99% of the membership.

I must say I always thought that elections were for getting rid of governments. Silly me. Perhaps I remember the 1970s too well. Reckless Labour paving he way for cruel Thatcher.

Just in case you haven't spotted this yet, Al believes and actively regurgitates anything that supports a view held by him and quietly ignores anything that doesn't.

I was reading some of the posts on Labour policy - along the lines of "where's the magic money tree? Who'll pay?".
The same people never raised an eyebrow at Boris's recent "election" pledges, nor worried too much when we were printing hundreds of billions to rescue banks.

But as soon as you want to fill a pot hole or have decent public services they pile out of the woodwork.
I find it odd, these aren't people that benefit when money is handed to private companies to squander so why the support? Are folk really that naive?
