Libraries?
As far as I'm concerned, close them all. Waste of my Council Tax.
If you want to read a book, buy one. If you want to read a book, there's millions in charity shops a quid each or even for free.

You wrote that before, you may write it again, back on topic
What about the British Library, full of ancient documents, or subscription libraries, paid for by users?
You are right about free books, picked up several today including one by Peter Handke who just won the Nobel Prize despite some distasteful opinions :?

As I posted on page 2 of this thread, libraries aren't just for borrowing books, they benefit the whole spectrum of society on a whole spectrum of things they need and not just the Mick self spectrum :?

We've been through this movie before.

I lived in the library as a kid and still use it every week
I could never have had the money to purchase all those books as a child. Why should that wonderful knowledge or the joy of reading only be available to those with the ability to pay?

Because that's the way of the new capitalism, you are what you have.If you have nothing you're no one.

There are books other than cheap novels. Reference books can cost hundreds. Choirs hire music, too.

"you are what you have"

that seems to be the most pertinent statement these days.

Thankfully there are still a few of us that aren't bound by all the mass consumerism.
And for some of us, if we haven't got it, we can borrow it (as in libraries  ).

Unfortunately it was ever thus in some people's minds,it's the basis of the class system.

Thankfully there are still a few of us that aren't bound by all the mass consumerism.

To an extent we all are,the system has been set up that way.

And for some of us, if we haven't got it, we can borrow it (as in libraries  ).

Which is a sign of a more equal society, unfortunately those 'signs' have become more limited by the austerity plan of the past decade and will need a lot of effort to regain.

What do you want them all for?

Used to borrow lots of books from the library
Now I like to keep books I have read, I get many cheap or free
Just got a book voucher as a present, had to cycle out to Shopping Heaven (the bookstore has no branch in town) and order two new books that I had had my eye on for a while, but I was too mean to buy them new

Home is full of books, a harmless matter I think, they do not smell or need to be fed and cared for

Often I need not go on the interweb, questions about Irish Wolfhounds and about orchestra conductors came up on these fora, I have books about both

I have quite a few books. I like to read them. I especially like to read when I travel or use public transport.

I also have some books that are more interesting for browsing and looking things up, rather than reading cover to cover.

For example the Oxford Dictionary of British Place Names.

You could set up your own lending library,it would be a great resource for the community.

Good idea, but in my leafy suburb there would not be many customers

Besides, my collection is quite selective
