Speaking with almost no knowledge of the Scots economy, I hazard a guess that most employed folk there are not employed in the production of any kind of potato, or oats, or even haggis and raspberries. We associate those products with Scotland, but there must be lots of things and services that come from there without the origin being as obvious. Maybe, I don't know, UPVC widow frame extrusions or something like that, or banking and insurance services. Oil, gas and electricity. And tourism. Anyway, most economies rely mostly on domestic custom rather than export. I'm pretty sure that Scotland is a viable business proposition. Just as Catalonia would be if they were given the option.

we can confidently predict that this video will appear in the director's cut of the next SNP party political broadcast

Please encourage your English MPs to get Section 30 signed as how can we ever be listened to in WM?

I'm sure you're correct.
Same as any region of the UK.

My issue is that Scotland was being cited as the only place you can get potatoes from.

Not the only place but it is the main place where seed potatoes are grown (& the commercial crops will be grown from seed stock rather than keeping some of the crop to replant). Over 3x the area in Scotland compared to England & Wales (10,508 Ha v 3,254 Ha) according to the link given earlier (it is unclear whether "Yorkshire" is additional to "England and Wales" or included).

I believe the potatoes were an attempt to find something MickF likes and is from Scotland :)
The question was
What else do they produce that I may like?

The conclusion I arrived at is as long as there are some potatoes on Mick’s plate then there is no need to consider the bigger picture of how commercial growers can keep doing just that. I could of course reverse the question and ask what does Cornwall produce I couldn’t live without and I assume we would draw a blank.
I doubt there is nothing thats done in Scotland which couldn’t be done in a region of England and vice versa. Some areas are more suited than others. e.g. S W England does produce some Hydro electric but it’s peanuts compared to Scotland’s Hydro. Scotland has a lot of hill sheep and yes there’s sheep on Dartmoor too. I should know because I used to send hundreds of them down there from Scotland. :D

I could say I’d buy mine from Devon :) Having visited Devon three times now I’m never enamoured with the place, or people, so yes I’d get mine from Cornwall.

Staying on the potato theme ................
Scotland have an industry producing seed potatoes. I understand that and I accept that.
There's nothing special about Scotland for potatoes. If their industry collapsed, the rest of the UK would increase theirs to compensate.

Failing that, do as we did a few short months ago.
Plant your own spuds and you don't need seed potatoes from anywhere, least of all from Scotland.

Back on topic ........

I think that Scotland needs England/Wales/Cornwall more than we need them. I fail to see how independence can help them in the slightest. Devolution is one thing - and a Good Thing as well. We all need a bit of devolution from central governments. Independence for such a small population is a step too far.

Can someone who knows about these things please do me a favour: correct the spelling of Scottish in the thread title, please!

And Independence, for that matter!

Dunno how it can be done right through the thread. Independence and Scottish done at the OP.

The Gaelic language and the Scots language must be promoted to create a passion for independence, like in Wales

Every time I hear Taoiseach pronounced my hindbrain chimes in with Teeschachtel, which might best be translated from German as tea-caddy.

That "the" in the topic title is a bit superfluous - doesn't look like English English at all.
