Politics threads overgrowing again?

I love our political threads but they are better when kept in well -defined order and not allowed to proliferate. May I suggest that mods take out the shears again and members be more self-disciplined in starting new threads in this politically charged time?

There is some unnecessary stuff on here, plenty from me, but no-one is forced to read it. There is a lot of technical information that I do not need, but some find it very useful

Canuk, late of this parish, mentioned a useful French phrase, 'jusq'au boutisme', describes keeping going although one has already lost (or won)
(applicable to cycle races too!)

There was a review of the colours a few months ago to define the different jobs and forum account privileges.

I have very few privileges, just doing housekeeping and ridding the spam, plus approving/disapproving of members' first posts.

Used to like Orwell as a kid but I grew up and moved on to aldous huxley and Joseph Heller. I don't know if they're more heavyweight commentators I just liked their writing styles more.

It's out of choice, not decree.

It means I can pop in and out - or not at all - and not having to keep an eye on all the posts and characters for trouble brewing. Though I can flag up stuff as I see it.

Also, I'm not that suitable for modding IMO.
I'm more than happy as I am.

What is frustrating is that every political thread returns to the same well-worn roads.

They're just the same rehashed slagging matches; my guy is best, your lot are all idiots, here's the same reasons I trotted out 4 weeks ago, here are some smears on his/her character that we've all heard 20 times before, here is why YOUR smears are stupid ...

Whatever the topic, members just bring in their own agenda, and post the same stuff. Maybe just put it in one thread, they're all the same eventually!
(look at the "Lying in Politics" thread - I think post10 was the first to drag it back to the same old stuff. )

UK politics is like this, because we have a deliberately-confrontational parliament arrangement. We've built it on First Past The Post, Winner Takes All, where the winning party is expected to govern without much collaboration.

It would be nice to have a more European-style parliament, with proportional representation and coalition government as the normal state of affairs. Then politicians would be forced to work together productively instead of just shouting at each other.
