I have several but one of them is used almost exclusively, they are all in working order
My old Gillott goes out once a year

Why does one need more than one cycle (house, horse, car, book..)?

Whatabout tandems, trikes, quadracycles, unicycles?

Needs more questions. At least sub divide into rideable and nearly.
How about " yours" and those adopted as the wife doesn't use them?
Maybe ridden as opposed to looked at?
What about " investments" or working tools?

I think I am interested to know how many complete rideable bikes people have, summer and winter machines is an obvious possibility
I have three singles, thinking of adding a tandem, unicycle, maybe a cargo bike* when I retire
* no, I want to live near the shops so I can walk!

I've also got a cheap Peugeot bought from a neighbour last summer for a Euro, waiting to be fettled (he's bought an electric thing instead).
Four trailers as well, of different capacities, for camping, shopping, taking rubbish to the decheterie, and a second single-wheel job which hooks on behind the first one, just to get myself noticed (sort of Bob-Bobbin' along).
They all get ridden, and yes, we do have rather a large barn.

Any bike in my garage that stands unused for a year or more starts to disappear as bits get used as spares. The first thing to disappear is usually the saddle. I have an unused tandem with no saddles. I have a solo bike (Ti Audax) with the wrong size handlebar stem because the right one happened to be perfect for a bike I was actually intending to use. But my Spa Titanium Tourer is the only ready to go bike at this point in time. I need a clear out really. Too much stuff.

exact number? Not quite sure. Total includes tandems and at least one unicycle.

IMHO you are best off with different bikes for different jobs, much as you might have more than one pair of shoes or trousers. I normally have at least half a dozen bikes 'on the go' even though I might do most of my miles on one or two of them.

Incomplete/unused bikes are projects and/or sources of spare parts.

9 pedal cycles being 6 trikes and 3 bikes. All are ready to ride, apart from pumping tyres and moving saddlebag across.

Three bikes are greatly different - a small wheeler, a geared touring bike and a fixed wheel. The six trikes are also all different being different axle construction or drive mechanisms, so a matter of mechanical interest.

Years ago I had a more varied stable, all very different and for different purposes.

The statistics gathered so far are interesting. More people have nine or more bikes than any other category.

That's a very 'modern' viewpoint. Old school bikies are likely to add another to the list; that being a scruffy old load lugger that they would be happy to leave locked up outside the library, or shops, for instance.
