Post by Oldjohnw »

30 years ago today Mr Mandela was freed from prison.

Do we need another Mandela?

More than ever, I think. But he or she would do better focusing their activities on the opposite side of the Pond...

....or here in Englandshire.... :(
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.
Let us pass the time by performing physical experiments...

I think that there are a whole bunch of national leaders who should themselves be in prison: not as political prisoners but as crooks.

A hero, but a hero because he could not get his hands politically dirty for 27 years. By the time of his arrest which led to his incarceration he had turned, however reluctantly, to violent methods to overthrow apartheid.

I'm not saying that was necessarily wrong, obviously the actions of the white government at the time were criminally violent, but he wouldn't be held in the same esteem if had gone a lot further down that path. He became a legend, ironically, through the actions of apartheid rule.

He could've left prison a very bitter and angry man of great power, but he didn't.
That's what made him great.
