Hi JC

Yes you are correct. It is so long ago I can't remember which ones I actually put on the Galaxy in the end, but I have been using the bike without problems ever since, including several fully laden tours. I have done at least 5,000 miles on the bike with the alternative pads.

On the issue of toe in, I came to the conclusion that any benefit from setting pads up with toe in was minimal, and in any case only likely to be very temporary, because the brake pad soon wears. So unless you are going to regularly adjust for toe in, I think any effect is only temporary. In summary, I don't bother with toe in! (Shock Horror!! ) I think it is more important to ensure that the pads contact the rim in the right place.

You can save yourself all that incompatible grief by buying the CX70 brake shoe cartridges here. S M & L spacer options are available. 9e shipping. There is also an eBay seller in the Far East who ships cheaper. Search “R55C+1” the ad with ‘image coming soon’.

these brake blocks/holders

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brake-blocks/ashima-road-brake-blocks-aluminium-standard-shimano/

appear to have the toe adjustment, use a 5mm screw, accept standard shimano inserts and are £7.99 a pair. They ought to work with BR-CX50 bolts and spacers.

These https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s104p824/KOOLSTOP-Dura-Road-Pad-Holders ought to work too and are £19 for a set of four.

FWIW you may get away with non-toe-adjustable brake blocks but it all depends on how good your bosses are on your frameset; if they are slightly wonky every new set of brake blocks may give you a dose of the squealing nasties, until they bed it.

cheers

Thanks for all the ideas,

This seems like the best fix , Im not sure Hbike actually have these in stock though , when I try to order it says they will "procure them". I fired them off an email but I haven't seen them anywhere else online and the ebay guy only has the Large size sets with the large spacer.

Id be interested to know if the spacers from the cx50 would match up the same as the spacers on the cx70 pads in size and concaveness in that case I could just use the cx50 spacers and bolts with the cx70 brake shoes.

I’m betting the Cx50 bolt & spacers are a perfect match for the Cx70 cartridge shoes. I’d order, there’s clearly limited stock and anyone else reading this with a similar predicament will be snapping them up. 4 sets left I believe. Those spacers could possibly be cut to length. I have three sets of the complete Cx70’s. I fluctuate between the 18 & 24mm spacers on my bikes. With TRP road levers and the salmon pads they make for a superbly effective & minimal rim wear braking system.

The Kool Stop Dura Road Pad Holder has a different nut/bolt configuration compared with the Ashima ones, i.e. the bolt and nut are reversed as it were: it uses an allen headed nut. It's not possible to see this from the small image on Spa's website, but it's the same as the Kool Stop Dura 2 cartridge in the image below. I don't think the Kool Stop ones would work therefore.

you are quite right they have the male and female parts reversed (not visible in Spa's tiny pic). Silly me.

Of course with any third party holder there is always a chance that the curvature of the 'bulge' in the holder won't match the concave end of the CX spacer exactly.

However IIRC shimano 105 brake blocks have the correct fittings on them to use the CX spacers, and they do have the correct curvature. So if you can buy those at reasonable cost then that is the way I'd suggest to go.

I reckon they'll work. FWIW you can buy them cheaper eg on amazon.

Looking at the EV techdoc

https://si.shimano.com/pdfs/ev/EV-BR-CX70-3223A.pdf

the spacers and bolts for CX50 brakes are different parts but are a class B fit, so differ in appearance only. This means that the curvature on the CX50 spacers/brake blocks is the same as CX70 spacers/brake blocks.
