Looking for a route
Dear all,
I am planning to do a 7 day LEJOG in May. My goal is to average 150 miles a day and I am currently looking for a route. Is there a proven route (preferably even available as a gpx file) that comes to your mind for my planned duration? I am hoping that although I only have 7 days, my rather high daily mileage will allow for a still quite scenic and not too busy route. I don't mind hills
I don't want to spend too much time on route planning. Ideally I find a gpx file online that I can adjust slightly.
I look forward to hearing your comments on this

This is scenic and not busy. It's suggested for 20 days but just stop at every third point and you can do it in 7. GPX already prepared you may need to register to download but it's free.

I like the way that route slots between Birmingham and Coventry. That is a rural gap that a lot of people are not aware of and it is mostly easy cycling.

Stay off of the A30 as much as possible, and avoid Liverpool, would be my 2 bits of input.

Thanks for those super quick replies. I really appreciate your help!
Both routes look very nice! The Wimp route heads north from Gloucester while the cycle.travel one heads north east. They meet again around Edinburgh. The Wimp route is also significantly shorter. Do we have someone here with experience in route planning and good knowledge of the UK's countryside who can judge how much scenery I miss with the Wimp route? Which one would you take?
Again, thanks a lot for helping me in planning this adventure.

I think the Wimp route takes you through the unpleasantness around Warrington /Wigan, which the easterly route avoids. That might swing it for me.

Planning a route that suits oneself is half the fun in my opinion.
Let's hope you don't get a puncture or it could be game over!

I did the Wimps ride, my total being 939 mls. A great number to finish on
I’d do that route again with a few minor changes. I doubt you could get an easier ride out of D&C. Avonmouth was dire and I’d look hard at other ways getting past Bristol. Some bits of the A49 before Ludlow were not pleasant, depends on time of day maybe. After Ludlow the route we took through Shropshire was stunning and I’d say nothing on the East would make it worthwhile heading over there. Same applies for Cheshire, Cumbria, and Southern Scotland.

We went through some lovely bits of Warrington and did end up exiting a roundabout going against the one way flow and if you miss Standish then you miss Pepper Lane pies.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I think I should take a closer look at the Wimp route then. I will try to find an alternative routing around Bristol. Let me know if any other potential adjustments / sections you would substitute come to your mind.

I don't know why the NCN 41 even goes out past Avonmouth. Either of the above (not sure how it got there) are nicer and shorter. The NCN 41/410 as shown is quieter but under the motorway there may be broken glass. Kings Weston Lane will have traffic including lorries on a weekday, it's about 1 km. I rode it last Sunday and was passed by one van.
Also before M5 bridge shorter and nicer to go straight on at Clapton In Gordano to Portbury, Pill. It also take you past a COOP in Pill handy for supplies.
With regard to route planning in general some people have ridden LEJOG numerous times and will have a good overview of an entire route. However, almost everyone knows the roads in their own patches far better as they will have ridden multiple options hundreds and in some cases thousands of times. A combination of the two will make a good route. In the end only you know your preference for hills, traffic, scenery, distance to make the final judgement and that comes down to route planning.

Re: Looking for a route
I, along with others, was involved with the Wimps route. Some of the route had to be plotted with regard to overnight camps so may not be ideal for others. A lot of effort was put into trying to keep to a "practical" flattish route and away from main roads but sometimes it's unavoidable. A 7 day route is around 130 miles a day depending which course is taken but that will alter with regard to where the overnight stops are. If taking the west route then Preston has to aimed at to get across the river Ribble. There are other ways across but you are getting into hilly territory.
You'll never know if you don't try it.
