El Paso was the first record I ever bought, with some money that my Mum or Dad gave me (to shut me up probably) from a remainder bin somewhere in central London in the early '60's.I always loved the Mexican style guitar on it, played by Grady Martin (I just discovered, who played on a lot of hits in his lifetime),Roy Orbison Patsy Cline etc.

Yesterday evening, I listened to The Manhattan Transfer singing "I know why (and so do you)".
Much better than the Moonlight Serenade Glen Miller original and more in keeping with the swing era.
My dad was an accomplished pianist and often played swing other than the classical stuff. This music was one of his favourites when he was in the RAF during 2nd WW in the NAAFI, but he played it with swing!

Leo Kottke, a great acoustic guitarist player, his tune 'Busted Bicycle', I was listening to this yesterday. I thought that one of the riffs sounded familiar, it occurs in Robert Wilkins 'That's No Way to Get Along'. A neat little joke in the Leo Kottke's title, if it was deliberate . A busted bicycle is indeed, no way to get along. The Rolling Stones also recorded a different Wilkins song with the same musical theme, 'Prodigal Son' which they used without attribution initially. I don't recall hearing the the Stones version before .
I think something like T-Rex's 'Deborah(?) possibly might owe something to this as well.

I like 'late/middle' era Dylan, that kind of Rockabilly sound, The 'Love and Theft' album's my favourite from that period. Great swinging drumming on that track r2. I sometimes listen to Dylan Radio.

I got turned on to some great older american music by his 'Theme Time Radio Shows' which were aired on Radio 2 a good while back, where he acted as DJ, on a different theme each week.

I have Radio 3 on when I want music as pop music is no longer to my taste.

It's the only BBC service I use on a regular basis. Radio 3 is one of the few things that the BBC does that the commercial sector does not. The licence fee would be about £20 if the BBC stopped duplicating the TV and radio of the commercial sector. I'd be happy for the licence fee to be scrapped even if it meant the end of Radio 3 as there are now many internet radio stations playing classical music 24/7 ad free and for no fee, unlike Radio 3 which is going down the BBC's usual audience chasing route by playing more and more pop music, jazz and feeble politically correct drama.
