When I was a draconian father to Daughter One (or so she claims, often loudly) I banned her from imbibing The Bunty as I believed it a vehicle of insidious consumerist petit-bourgeois propaganda. Oh yes it was!

Anyroadup, after she got a degree in English Lit and an MA in Children's literature, she was good enough to agree. So there.

I would like to warn her about fairy stories, particularly the English and German ones. But now she is the expert and I must kowtow to her pearls of wisdom on such matters.

Mind, the nature of The Hate Mail is not just that its read but that the toxic memes and notions then chew their way through yer brain then out of yer gob! Those readers seem unable to stop the process. I believe the toxicity includes an element of pleasure-centre stimulation, see? What they need, those eye-sucking addicts of noxious nasty notions, is a kinder paperboy who will wang the Hate Mails and Borisgraphs into the sea each morning, delivering them a Beano instead.

Haha..it could be. I know they've just locked down the communal room at her sheltered housing complex so she can't access the Jigsaws.

Y'know, I only really got hooked on the Beano when I was a student. Always a mad rush for it when a copy turned up in the student common room. If you missed your turn, you'd be waiting hours. Excellent stuff!

Hi again, I used to be an obsessive reader of "Mad" magazine, Alfred E Neumann if I remember correctly.
In today's lunatic world it would appear quite childish & passe!
I loved the cartoons such as depicting common phrases, such as "Scotching An Ugly Rumour", "Heavy Plant Crossing" et al. Not sophisticated enough for today's consumers of pap.

what does she think of Harry Potter? I understand some critics think the books are full of cliches and such like. I just finished watching the films since I got some cheap on Blu Ray. well I had to find some thing to do in the lock down

They are full of clichés as I found out when I read one book to a child about 20 years ago, but clichés are not noticed by young children as they've never heard them before. I was surprised when I heard that many adults read them as the one I read bored me while it thrilled my little listener.

Oh, I remember! It's eased off quite a lot now - thank you Supermarkets for instigating the one-out-one-in policy, it really works!

The only thing we simply can't get at the moment is dried yeast. I asked one of the shelf-stackers this morning, had he actually seen any? He said, a few packets came in first thing in the morning, and they were all snapped up at once. But other 'necessities' are around - even loo rolls!

One thing that's going to be off the shelves - in some stores at any rate - is Easter Eggs. Apparently they're deemed 'non-essential goods' by some authorities. So get yours in while the going's good, folks! Personally, I can't see the point in them: shockingly over-priced for the amount of chocolate you actually get, and a huge waste of packaging. So we'll be missing out, this year....

The daughter got addicted to the Potter tomes, not so much because of their Great Literature but because she enjoyed seeing how The Famous Five and other semi-Edwardian children's' adventure stories of The English Middle Clarrses got translated into "modern". As one reviewer put it (words to this effect): It's just another story about plucky English public school boys & girls dealing with bad eggs, given a bit of the Tolkiens.

The stuff never struck me as being a profound set of essays on ethics, as some have opined. To be honest, I got bored after the first few chapters of the first book. And the filums looked like just another excuse to be clever with the CGI.
