I was reading on the train as one does. For some reason I was getting disapproving looks. Some of the women looked disgusted. I picked up a discarded copy of the "Economist" and hid my magazine in it.
The obituary column of the Economist fell open at Raymond Poulidor. Who ever's zat? He was a Labourer initially. He rose to greatness as a Tour cyclist. Well almost greatness. As the Economist points out he came second and third on the Tour no less than EIGHT times. He was the French equivalent of Eddie the Eagle. The whole of France loved him. Keen and faster rival (by seconds) Jacques Anquetil just got the glory. If he had any resentment. Raymond hid it well. If competition cyclists hated Raymond it was for one reason. Raymond was opposed to drugs in cycling. In any shape or form.
Meanwhile I will now buy a copy of the Financial times. So much better for hiding my copy of the Beano.

One wonders whether Poulidor deliberately did not win, he was so popular, people loved him. Maybe they are respected Anquetil in a distant way. I think Eddie did not get up to second often
