Recommend a cycle camera ( update : Garmin VIRB 30 ultra FAILED )

On the rear I have an Aldi Cycliq clone which also works very well

I’d forgotten about the Aldi one. Their copycat stuff is usually brilliant.

Thanks - that seems to tick my boxes

I bought two of these before I bought the Cycliq cameras. They are awful, not worth the money.

What were the issues?
I'd be looking at sub-2hour rides on road, so no need for massive battery life or off-road vibration protection, but I would want good images.

On a normal road the vibrations meant the image quality was so poor it was difficult to read car number plates

I've had a Go Pro Session for about 4 years. It sits on my cycle helmet and is about as small as you can get. The issue I've had is image quality is not as good as bigger and dearer cameras + the battery is inbuilt and not replaceable. It loses charge in. a few days and is now being 'retired'. It's replacement is a Garmin VIRB 30 ... I can't wait !

I feel a lot happier knowing my journeys are on video - I do not do it to review rides, it is more of an insurance policy if I get taken off ! Sad but to me valuable . I've dealt with horrible bike collisions since 2002 in the police as a specialist investigator and footage from crashes is worth it's weight in gold IMO ... thus I am willing to spend the money (not that I want to get taken off you understand!).

I hope the Garmin lives up to all the reviews

just come across this, and realised you've splashed out already!

I have the earlier Virb, mounted on the handlebars, looks like a torch, nice big slider switch on the side I can use even with gloves on. With mine I bought a spare battery, worth the extra if you haven't already thought of it. After about 21/2 hours I can swop the battery, I'm rarely out for longer.

Of what appears to be a Moulton APB or TSR... in a lovely green colour!

It's an APB in kawaski green (that's what the powercoating guy recommended for a bright green)

Irritatingly, I set up my new Garmin VIRB 30 ultra last night, then realised that the tightwads hadn’t supplied a micro SD card for it, so it’s about as much use to me as breasts on a fish at present.

The micro SD card turned up, and now I’m having fun fun fun, recording all the crap driving / left hooks / cigarette paper close passes. At least this camera makes it easy to bookmark incidents. It’s got voice control, I’ve got to work out how to get it to recognise loud swearing as a cue to bookmark an ‘event’.

I think I should get a camera having being almost taken out by police driver at a junction on Saturday. I was waiting to turn right at some traffic lights. I stared at him in disbelief as he accelerated towards me from the road on the left, and he had his eyes closed. At least he wasn't lying when he came out with the classic "Sorry mate I didn't see you". I kid you not

I think I should get a camera having being almost taken out by police driver at a junction on Saturday. I was waiting to turn right at some traffic lights. I stared at him in disbelief as he accelerated towards me from the road on the left, and he had his eyes closed. At least he wasn't lying when he came out with the classic "Sorry mate I didn't see you". I kid you not

It’s a fantastic bit of kit. It’s tiny, but takes superb quality video. You can overlay metrics as well, so it looks like your some sort of fighter jet pilot, or Iron man. I’ve already got a suicidal close pass on video, from the weekend ( I actually think he did make contact, although not enough to bring me down). I really rate it, and the importing and editing can be done on a smart phone, via an app, which makes it super easy to use as well. One thing you should be aware of, is that It doesn’t come with a storage card, so unless you have one ( a micro SD card ) you can’t use it to record. Other than that, it’s absolutely great.

Well after no more than a couple of weeks, the crappy Garmin VIRB 30 Ultra has failed. The camera circuit has failed. Yet again, Garmin are going to get a rocket from me, and I’ll be getting a refund for a faulty, useless piece of garbage from them. I don’t know why I keep trusting them to produce something that won’t be crap.
