Careful! It's best to vary just one thing at a time, otherwise you won't know which change doesn't work.

T'other thing, of course, is that riding with your saddle too high eventually abrades your posterior.

If it is adjusted forwards it will need raising a little, otherwise it will be closer to the pedals (ie lower) than before it was moved forwards!

Yes, one if the reasons for moving to back was to increase the distance from the pedals.

Lots of good info here, and the various links on the side to other cycle fit issues.

Dunno what happened with the link, but its going now.
When I look at it, I've seen this site before. I think he is pretty clear when he talks about seat setback and loading quads or hamstrings, and I guess this is from experience.
However, he reproduces that bloody Catherine wheel thing about which muscles fire when...https://neillsbikefit.com.au/?page_id=364...and its wrong. You only have to ride along with your hand on your thigh to know its wrong. The hamstrings PULL THE KNEE DOWN, or you can call them hip extensors if you like. The diagram has the hamstrings firing for a tiny part of the Catherine wheel as knee flexors, but his own text says the hamstrings are not working for only 15% of the circle. I think his own stuff is good, such a pity to spoil it with a poor diagram cribbed from elsewhere, he could do a better one himself!

Same error: too many redirections.

...

Hamstrings do flex the knee as well as extending the hip. (And some medially and some laterally rotate the lower leg.)

Still haven't adjusted my saddle yet. I'll have a play today. It's not a million miles out as I can go for a steady ride, with some decent hills thrown in and it not be a problem. It really only is when I push myself hard.

Before you move it, put a bit of tape round the saddle rail so you know exactly where it was.

I put it in my favourites, and I can get in. Link above is from my favourites.
I can get it by googling** Neils bike fit as well.
Jonathan, you sound like somebody with specialist knowledge. I originally trained as a med. lab. technician, so any anatomy is simply what I have picked up along the way.
Agreed, hamstrings flex the knee....I wasn't as much objecting to that as objecting to the omission of the major function of the hamstrings, which is to extend the hip. (isn't it?) By the same token, if they are going to include hamstrings flexing the knee as part of pulling the pedal up, then why not quads. flexing the hip as part of the same process?
I don't think I pull up on the cleats at all. I can for a short period push the pedal over the top (quads) and pull it back at the bottom (hams.)

To be fair, Neils bike fit has the best discussion I have found on what he calls "Preferential Fatigue"
I crashed and burned just about a year ago https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=131678&hilit=hamstrings.
Short version is I moved my cleats back (feet forward) to stabilise my feet on the pedals, and was surprised to find doing that loaded my quads; equally surprised to find that moving my saddle back evened up the work of the muscle groups. I'm still staggered that such small alterations to riding position alter the way in which I use different muscle groups.

**actually not Google ...the icon is a blue lower-case "e"....sorry to be so technical!

Hi, Colin.

Only enough anatomy to pass medical exams! Much better on cycling physiology. Spent most of my career in Oxford laboratories. Where were you?

I always do stretching before taking ride. It helps me in preventing injuries.
