Trying to find a suitable bike at 27st?

Post by Big Boy Dan »

Hi, for years i've been on the really heavy side, while im active i struggle to keep my weight down, dieting etc.
recently i've managed to lose 3 or so stone just by cutting out junk etc and walking to and from work, intially i was interested in cycling to and from work but the weight limits on bikes are a nightmare to figure out.
im an absolute amateur looking for these kinds of things and google searches come up with tonnes of useful links but almost every bike linked on these posts are either non existant or from the US with insane shipping dates.
does anyone have any reccomendations on where to start looking? ideally under £1k.
would be very greatful for any and all help on this issue. cheers!

What's 27st in Kg? Try searching!

To the OP, I'm sure you've already thought of or done this, but you could try some local bike shops, they should be able to give you some advice. There's a company called Ribble, who you buy direct from, I'm not suggesting you buy from them but I noticed on their site that they have a question facility where they will answer queries. Perhaps they could help give you some ideas?

Good luck!

There was a guy used to post on here called himself Pizza man.
Here he is.....https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51737&hilit=pizza&start=15
Its always the wheels that let the big guys down.
That German hybrid that somebody linked won't have handbuilt wheels, but its IGH so not (too) dished.
You can follow Pizza man's journey; you only need to be better at searching the computer than me, this isn't a high standard! (eg....I've lost the underscore!)
When the rear spokes fail on the German job, get somebody who knows what they are doing to re-build it with 13/14G single butted spokes, and stress-relieve it

As soon as I saw the title of this post, I immediately thought of Pizza Man.
Land's End to John O'Groats at 20odd stone.

I'd suggest a old school rigid (is no suspension) steel 26" mountain bike.

Something like a raleigh or Dawes. Built like a tank!

But it might be worth checking it has a cassette rear hub as these are stronger.

Perhaps it's worth making a list of common bikes with cassette hubs?

Carrara crossfire have a good reputation.

Cheers James

Hi Dan, search for elephant bikes online, they are ex post office bikes that have been refurbished I think you can pick one up for under £300.

I'm not sure I'd recommend an Elephant bike if you're overweight and just starting out. My wife went for one recently, partly because of her weight. While she does like the bike, it has nearly put her off cycling. The combination of (significant!) weight and the very limited range of gears means that she struggles with the slightest uphill slope, and often has to get off and push. It's significantly reduced her enjoyment, and she's about to try and find something better, making it an expensive mistake. Going uphill on a heavy bike while overweight is no fun when the gears don't go very low.
It may not happen that way with everyone, of course, just something to consider.
