On another thread about the book of trespass I believe you said you didn't mind if people walked through your land, or something like that. Have you had a change of heart?

The two are not mutually incompatible. Maybe MickF welcomes people walking on his land because of the target practice.

Perhaps because that's where people wild camp the most, and will now face criminal prosecution - just a thought

The addendum that I read does clearly limit it to the intent to stop traveller encampments springing up on private land, such that they have to be injuncted off it - in future the police could become involved. If the law confines itself to that, all good, if not, then a significant issue.

Context

If that comment was unties to anything else then there may be an issue, but it wasn’t.

It was prefaced by the comment “ We will tackle unauthorised traveller camps. We will give the police new powers to arrest and seize the property and vehicles of trespassers who set up unauthorised encampments, in order to protect our communities.”

It was also in the context of a 2018 consultation on the effectiveness of enforcement against unauthorised developments and encampments, with a 39 page government response here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... sponse.pdf

A letter from the Home Secretary that announced a plan that: Extended police powers to tackle trespassers

The Government will consult on proposals to amend the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to:

“Considering a new criminal trespass offence

The Home Office will conduct a review that will consider whether it should criminalise the act of trespassing when setting up an encampment. This will consider the financial and operational impacts that new legislation would have, investigate the effectiveness of similar legislation in Ireland and consider how such a power could work in practice. This could act as a real deterrent to such activity in the future, and it is therefore right that this option is explored fully.”

Throughout which it was perfectly clear that proposals were limited to unauthorised encampments.

So, yes, you could take the view that the comment in the manifesto operated in a vacuum, then it could mean one thing, but if people actually followed the development of it, and Interpreted it within the context of everything else that had led to that point, then it was much clearer. Particularly since the actual consultation was very clear about what it extended to.

But, if You’re and old fashioned partisan politics rabble rouser and see the benefit in running around riling up the lefties about the ‘threat’ of a tory government in order to enhance your new book sales...then it’s money for old rope really.
