M5 is the threading on the centre bolt. I expect the other lettering on your SL-7900 end cap has just worn off....?

............ then why hasn't worn off (even slightly) on the LH lever?

Giving the 10s writing on the RH boss a damned good rubbing and even used my thumb-nail, it steadfastly remains.

Despite what you have shown what it should say on the RH boss, I don't believe mine had anything other than the 10s.

FWIW unless you are using a half step arrangement or something, the LH lever sees a small fraction of the wear vs the RH lever on most bikes.

Many shimano DT and BE levers are not marked in the metalwork, but instead where wear is likely to erase the markings; quite often with a used set of such levers, you end up inferring what they might be from the general appearance and number of clicks etc.

Another idea .................

When I change gears with DT levers, I habitually only use my right hand for BOTH.

It just feels wrong to me, to use the left hand for the left lever. In fact, I don't have the "feel" for it when I've tried it and I over-shift or under-shit. Using the right hand, I'm usually spot on with where I want the front mech.

This therefore means, that the boss on my LH lever remains untouched and therefore still has it's writing.

maybe i'm missing something but why are you even touching the boss when changing gear, pretty certain i only use the top couple of cm of the lever.

As I said, I use my right hand for both levers.

The LH lever is operated by my RH fingers, and also my fingers tend to touch the frame, but not the plastic boss.

The RH lever is operated in two ways depending on which way I move the lever and what gear I am in.
One way, is from bottom gears or low ones to increase the ratio, it's a matter of fingers on the lever.
The other way, is the other way round ........ going from higher ratios to lower ones ......... I use a leverage system in that I hold the boss and use my thumb or palm near my thumb.

Hence why the markings on the RH boss have been worn away.

guess that explains it, the levers on the bike i'm currently using, new in 2000, have done knocking on 8000 miles this year and have barely picked up any use polish let alone actual signs of wear!

That said, the nail on my right index finger does pick up a bit of polish from the tyre on occasion, have to put the guard back on to save my finger!
