Barmouth Viaduct temporary closures

Post by pwa »

For anyone planning trips in that area, best to be aware of planned closures for restoration.

I always feel that when you get to the middle, stop and look up the estuary, you are looking at Wales in all her majesty. There is no finer view.

They wanted to shut the cycle path across it a couple of years ago, but there was a huge outcry & it stayed open
The authorities said it needed too much maintenance, but it is a a huge asset & attraction.

Ruskin would not have used the Mawaddach Trail, I guess, because it was still a railway.
But perhaps he came over by the (today) B road to Llynnau Cregennen. Or along the line of the main road North of the river. I don't know.

For the more adventurous (and fit) there is a finer version.
Barmouth -Cader Idris -Barmouth.

Start in town.
Over the bridge and straight up into the hills behind Arthog steadily gaining altitude towards secret Llyn Cyri, eventually to reach the long ridge of Craig-y Llyn to Craig Las. Just picking a route along and up somewhere.
Eventually to join the Pony Path where it emerges onto the plateau (Golden Plover country) and skirt the cliffs above Llyn Cae and so to the splendid summit.
Then descend the steep Fox's Path ;(always stay right on top of the ridge to avoid the sliding screes) to the shore of Llyn Cae and then on down the path.
At the B road go straight over and on down Afon y Kings and so to the Maddach Trail and the estuary as the sun "westers".
Follow this back to Barmouth short-cutting round to the Mawddach Terrace houses and so gain (big high tide can make this impossible and one must stay on the trail) the long bridge again.

Wander across the bridge as the sun sets golden into the lapping sea and your whole day's adventure is lit in a burnished glow behind you.

Retire to the slightly sleazy depths of Barmouth for /chips/ beer/ pizza (delete as appropriate) and and a feeling of utter contentment.

John Ruskin would have approved methinks?

There is talk of Fairbourne being abandoned in a few decades when the sea rises
Could the sea level affect the bridge?

Not directly. It is quite high above the waves. But it could pose a challenge for the coast line elsewhere.

Not just talk, it's official policy. Fairbourne's (soggy) toast!
