Splitting a pail of SHC 460 PM grease
For a while I have been interested in trying some mobilith shc460pm, one of the greases that was discussed a while back in the long grease thread.
There's s large pail on eBay for a reasonable price and I wondered how difficult it would be to arrange a group buy for and what are the actual practicalities of dispensing it from the pail to smaller containers? It's it pretty much a matter of scooping it out into smaller plastic tubs and it's it a horrible business? Does anyone know of a good source of them, at 16kg I was thinking we'd need 32 or 48x 4-500g tubs.

Re: Splitting a pail of SHC 460 PM grease
bulk grease pails are usually designed to permit a 'pneumatic greaser' device to be used on them. This can be used to either dispense grease (directly at high pressure) into machines that need lube, or it can be used to dispense (air-free) grease at lower pressure into smaller containers, smaller grease guns etc. I have such a 'pneumatic greaser' machine. IME if it is used on the correct sized pail, you get all the grease out of the pail 'cleanly' apart from a small amount in the hose and on the sides of the pail, which needs to be dealt with separately.
When dispensing grease into smaller containers it is of considerable advantage to keep it air-free and this is practically impossible if you just ladle it out.
If the pail you are thinking of buying is compatible with my machine I'm sure we could come to some arrangement.
cheers

Mobilith SHC PM 460 maybe a fantastic grease, but in my experience it washes out of bearings just as quickly as a cheap all purpose lithium grease. It's fine in relatively protected applications like hubs and pedals, but is no match for BB's or lower headset races (both using 2RS cartridge bearings) in direct spray.

That's disappointing, it's supposed to be highly washout resistant given its for open bearings in wet environments.

Yes! The spec' shows a score of 3 in the 'Water Washout, Loss @ 79 C, wt%, ASTM D1264' test. I've no idea how good this is or how it compares to 'lesser' greases.

IIRC you can buy greases with better washout scores than that. Washout is only half the battle; the other is what happens to the grease when it gets mixed with (contaminated) water.

Re: Splitting a pail of SHC 460 PM grease
I'd be interested in any planned group purchase if you go ahead.
Had looked into this before, I think it was possible to buy a box of grease cartridges around 380g each, 12 or 16 in number I think, when I looked into this previously?
Found it, it was here https://www.oil-store.co.uk/product/mobilith-shc-pm-460-2.

It would be considerably cheaper than the tubes. The seller was willing to take an offer a good bit below the ebay listing for the pail price (£100/16kg).
I think I'm out though, at least in terms of organising and distributing, based on iow's experience of the grease although I would take 500g if anyone is willing to go ahead with it.

Re: Splitting a pail of SHC 460 PM grease
Upthread it's mentioned that resistance to washout isn't great, but I think if 'washout' is an issue, then there's way too much water being sprayed at the relevant parts!
I use full length mudguards and mudflaps, and the BB bearings are pretty shielded if they are internal to the BB shell (i.e. square taper or Hollowtech 1 style. I can only see the bottom headset bearing being sprayed if riding in the rain without mudguards.
Unless you are riding a road bike without mudguards in rain or standing water, I think washout would be less of an issue than how the grease responds to water seepage/contamination.

Hi
Mobilith SHC PM 460 is designed for use in paper mills, a wet and sometimes corrosive environment
The ASTM water washout number is the weight percentage of grease removed during an hour of lab testing that ASTM acknowledge bears little resemblance to field use (or use in a field? ) ( https://www.astm.org/Standards/D1264.htm )
For context WD40 Marine Grade grease has a washout score of 3.8, despite being insoluble in water ( https://www.datocms-assets.com/10845/1595973826-wd-40-specialist-marine-grade-grease-tds-sheet.pdf ) although they don't specify the test used

Hi
<5% water washout is regarded as excellent. If you find that isn't enough for your purpose, consider a grease with a good water spray off test result (ASTM D 4049). Water at 40psi should more than match a lack of mudguards

But that's not carte blanche to use a jetwash to clean the bike/bearings!
