With reference to jdsk's earlier post about butchers' ('ook) for look, I presume it would simply be "Barnard" and the rhyme with "Castle" would be implied (The first syllable being "Ass.")

But I don't think that it's amenable to the best property of rhyming slang: the loss of the linking word. As in let me have a butcher's, NOT let me have a butcher's hook.

Of course, many well-known examples of rhyming slang do include the linking word:

apples and pears
Adam and Eve
boat race
Brahms and Liszt
brown bread
dog and bone
etc
etc

I've always assumed that the expression donkey's years was a bit of an aberration in that I imagine it began as donkey's (ears) = years but instead of just saying something like "It's been like that for donkey's" people felt they had to tack on years. Who knows? Who cares?

I always assumed it referred to a donkey's long lifespan - you never see a dead donkey, allegedly, so "a donkey's years" is a long time.
