NUCKLES: Railway service connecting NUneaton, Coventry, Kenilworth, royal LEamington spa and Stratford
..
'Barnard Castle' could be the words of the year, one hopes though that the town does not become too famous

With reference to jdsk's earlier post about butchers' ('ook) for look, I presume it would simply be "Barnard" and the rhyme with "Castle" would be implied (The first syllable being "Ass.")

That's very neat, eg "Tell that Barnard to test his eyesight before he gets in the car"?

Barnard Castle already has a meaning other than the place name:

Should Mr Cummings read this: if the cap fits.......

Jdsk wrote:But I don't think that it's amenable to the best property of rhyming slang: the loss of the linking word. As in let me have a butcher's, NOT let me have a butcher's hook.

Of course, many well-known examples of rhyming slang do include the linking word:

apples and pears
Adam and Eve
boat race
Brahms and Liszt
brown bread
dog and bone
etc
etc

Yes, but if there's a cryptolectic intention it works much better without.

(And I prefer it.)

I've always assumed that the expression donkey's years was a bit of an aberration in that I imagine it began as donkey's (ears) = years but instead of just saying something like "It's been like that for donkey's" people felt they had to tack on years. Who knows? Who cares?

I always assumed it referred to a donkey's long lifespan - you never see a dead donkey, allegedly, so "a donkey's years" is a long time.
Everyone's ghast should get a good flabbering now and then.

I've heard it said as 'Dickies years' around here.

'do-gooding celebrities' used by pp the home sec, understood as an insult, could be understood as a compliment I think

At least Gnus are capable of coordinated movement on migration.

Maybe we should have a Cabinet of Gnus?

Could the title of this thread be edited to exclude the made up words?

Done*
Made up, dreamed up, misused?
Many changes, developments in language occur through 'misuse'

* a compromise I guess. "A compromise is only good when all parties are dissatisfied"
