Dentist - Cleaning out Socket Post Extraction.

Post by NATURAL ANKLING »

Hi,
Had my first tooth extraction as an adult with exception of 4 as child, crammed mouth - too small a jaw? and bottom wisdom teeth at fifty.
I am now 62, and infected tooth removed say 4 years ago.
Never cleared up completely and gum erupted a few times with an abscess.
Top pallet swelled at the empty socket site after ..........next day after a prod and check up.

Needs fixing.
Dentist says there appears to be a bone fragment that shows up on x-ray.
Previous dentist who moved to private ten years ago, says thats a hospital job, now retired.
Naively thought ah that won't cost at all.
Currently in contact with dentist private, and due to latest dentist leaving they seem to quoting to extract, + x-rays - plus in depth x-rays.................how much, even though my email said gum at site of extraction.

Any dentist or some one who has had similar problem / experience after a nasty tooth extraction and now a gum still infected, shed light on procedure and cost, I know its a specialist not you dentist job?

Hi,
Received an email yesterday from the dentist saying they've booked me an appointment in a week tomorrow.
I suppose because the dentist I had originally saw me has left the practice, they won't commit to an estimate, which will probably mean loads of money In x-rays During the checkup.
I don't want to go in blind but I might just have to bite the bullet.

I don't know if it helps, but most decent practices have a page on their website, where example prices for a variety of procedures are listed. I link to one such at random here. This might give you an indication of the sort of ball-park figure to expect for the work you're about to have done. Hope all goes well for you - tooth pain can be so horrid!

I had a tooth removed in January, back upper external reabsorption, which was very unlucky. Basically cells in my gum were damaged and developed into osteocytes and then reabsorbed the inside of my tooth leaving the covering over the nerve so I had no idea what was going on until it collapsed on Christmas day. My dentist showed me the tooth in great detail including the roots and checked them over thoroughly.
It was slow to heal because of the inflammation that I had (apparently it doesn't spread to other teeth), but it healed over in 2 weeks and is now thickening up. My dentist said upper extractions are usually easier to heal than lower.
I then went on to have root canal work (cracked a tooth when I fell over and broke my wrist), he gave me an estimate, he always does, and despite the fact that the infection that caused the tooth to die was persistent and I needed more visits that anticipated, this is what he charged me. He is private and very very good.

Hi,
Latest-

"Here is cost of your treatment this saturday :
"£47 (for the assessment) + £85 (as I think Mr Xxxxxx will need an OPG - Xray). Treatment costs depend on what needs doing but if surgical removal of a fragment it’ll be in the order of £360."

Crikey :(

But I dont have any other option.

P.S.
Do they put you out for extraction of what ever they find on x-ray?

Bills I'm currently facing (not dental) because the NHS is being such a "do nothing" disaster area make those figures chicken feed!

If you need the dental work the NHS should be able to provide it (timescales probably depend on clinical urgency). Of course you'll still have to pay and it depends on the band. Pessimist I am these days re: NHS you might be in Catch 22 - they wont operate when it's in abscess state and when the abscess subsides it's no longer urgent ... (but as I say, I am somewhat dis-illusions with NHS these days so probably not a "balanced view").

But whether you are in Band £65-20 or Band £282.80 (and it still shocks me using words like NHS and £282.80 in the same sentence).

My wife recently had a molar out, cost £88, including the local anaesthetic. They didn’t knock her out but did ensure the gum was fully numb before going ahead. I think she’d previously had a consultation and x-ray that cost about £50.

This was with a fully private dentist, not NHS.

hi,
My dentist for 40 years eventually had to turn private.
He charged me I think £50 to remove the infected tooth.
Temporarily before retirement he went in with a lot on with now, they quote over 300 For extraction of a tooth.
Once had to see a dentist for an emergency, the one that was recommended to me charge me £100 just for looking and checking .

doctors tomorrow and then dentist on Saturday.
When you have your wisdom teeth out they put you out for that for sure and you have to go to hospital is that still right?
I'm just wondering that if they say surgical procedure whether or not that takes on a new meaning I would've thought it would still be local anaesthetics they're just going to open up the old hole in gum.

Not always, see:

and the "What type of anaesthetic is used?" section in:

When I had my wisdom tooth out it was just an (several) injections - and it was an impacted wisdom tooth that kept developing assesses. Didn't hurt but the levering that was going on I thought it was going to pull my lower joint off.

And all implants I've had done all just injections (where they cut your gums open and peel them open exposing the bone, drill a hole into the bone, hammer in a titanium plug then stitch it back up).

Hi,
Went to the dentist today after a frustrating visit, well partly at the doctors (another health problem).
So met a new dentist as the other one has gone to a another location to further career etc.
Pleasant enough and very informative, happy to chat if he can get a word in :P
What's the problem at the docs?
Lethargy and unexplained pain so exercise is hard work........what exercise.....cycling.
He is a volunteer for Dartmoor Rescue and has cycled end to end in 9 days.................so hard to stay on subject of my teeth.

So after a close up x-ray, and a panoramic x-ray.
It showed that my upper wisdom tooth could well be moving into the empty socket.
Pain in jaw at this point, there is a pointy bit and he reckons that its either the tooth coming over or the rear of the jaw bone being agrevated by the moving wisdom tooth.
Upper wisdom require careful extraction, mine is close to a sinus, so taking out could cause more complications than I have at now.
After much explaining I am happy to see how it goes, as its not so painful just a bit uncomfortable at the mo.
Referred to hospital which he works at two days and two days in the dentist.
Any consult at hospital will be free and with no further bother it might well be the end of the matter I hope.
So wait and see, a bit more relaxed that that's all it could be, slight smell and occasional taste If I suck gum / massage the area which could be gum disease...mild..., he is not that worried.

Most probably would just not bother the dentist.

Hi,
Tooth extracted in Nov 2014.

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=92332

Still experiencing problems :( thats 7 years later.....................

Anyway, so referral at hospital came up...........but gum feels ok so ignored.
Then on the last day of two week window to get appointment which was sunday and bank hol monday it flared up again.
Tried phoning tues and no reply / long wait so gave up.
A week later another letter :)
Saw my dentist at hospital last tues (he consults there two days a week) and basically had same conversation we had in april at dentist practice, not bad so leave alone.
But yesterday it I noticed that what I thought was a hole (site old abscess rupture) felt harder with my tongue, rubbed my fingernail over it and its something hard!
Got some tweezers on it and tugged but stuck fast.
Contacted dentist and got in next day.
Now if only I had noticed this last week.........!............
Now its £220-350 because I contacted private dentist, the larger if wisdom tooth has to come out.
In fairness he said I could go away and phone NHS.
But I decided that best sorted now.
He took a while to extract splinter............a root of old tooth.
I said I wouldn't of got that out my self? No you would not.
Cleaned out socket and poked around for any other bits, sewed me up.
Warned about bleeding (I am on clopidogrel "Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medicine. It prevents platelets (a type of blood cell) from sticking together and forming a dangerous blood clot")
B.P. is also up so keep an eye on bleeding.
NO exercise for two days, including cycling :(
Two people took a whole hour, I thought it would be five minutes :P
£220 lighter and I am off home.
The anesthetic wore off after an hour and pain level is 40% of original tooth extraction, took some paracetamol and some naproxen.
Seven hours later its good, topped up with paracetamol.
Hopefully that will be the last of my seven year problem.
Was mentioned that there is a hole to the wisdom tooth, which he said was unlikely to come though, we will see.

They wanted to do my wisdom teeth under sedation, but I insisted on a GA.

Since then I've had my heart done under sedation without any problems, and a DCCV, so if I were having my teeth done now I'd probably let them use a sedative.

After I had my wisdom teeth done it felt as if someone was hitting me on the temple with a hammer every time I swallowed. It wasn't until it persisted after all the other pain had gone a week later I noticed why: they'd left a splinter of jawbone sticking out of the gum, and my tongue was brushing it as I swallowed.

Hi,
I think it depends on how impacted they are whether you get local / put out.
Bottom were partially impacted, so was put out (put under)
Top are fully impacted, still have them.
