Refurbished by Argos in yellow and blue.
For being a Raleigh:
That rear brake hole - unmistakable in my experience
The frame number - one of the fabled “W”s? (Nothing on the steerer
Against/being something else
Runs a front mech braze-on (might be a later add-on)
Not sure about the lug pattern - think I saw it on a Record Ace I did up
Never seen anything other than the plastic cable guide on Raleighs
Drop-outs - decent, but unbranded
No sign of the 3 holes for a Raleigh head badge
Has braze-on gear bosses, only one set of bottle mounts.
Late 1980s?

Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
Looks a cheap frame if the rear brake bridge is anything to go by.
Swaged tube and a dollop of braze, so not given time for finishing.

Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
I think it looks like a Raleigh Carlton which has had some braze-ons added at some point. The cable guides are on top of/obscuring the frame number which would be bizarre unless they have been added later. Perhaps the headbadge holes were filled in when the other work was done- might be worth looking inside the headtube? I would guess early 80s not late- but the number we need from a Raleigh is entirely obscured
I have a Clubman frame hanging in my cellar with the same lugs (and the same sloppy brazing). It rode nicely enough...

Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
My guess is that the cable guides are a later addition; there’s no sign of a hole for the riveted plastic guide though, nor of any other system.
Can’t see any evidence of head badge rivet holes infilling - might know more when the paint is off. Wondered if the gear bosses too were added, but no sign of a pip on the underside.
Could you post a pic of your Clubman lugs?

Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
I think Raleigh may have made a lot of models for different export markets- in some markets brazing on the main tubes was frowned upon. This Raleigh on German ebay is a good example it's a Record (europe) which I spent an age looking for in Raleigh catalogues for the UK & US. I found it at the back of a german catalogue to buy as a frameset only. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anz ... 4-217-6825
Anyway here are the Lugs from the Clubman...
the W means Worksop ,the N means October and the 0 means 1980.

Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
Brilliant! Thanks. Brake bridge and lugs look to match the muster frame, and you’ve got the big hole for fastening the plastic cable guide. I had the later Clubman in my teens with the red finish. (Couldn’t afford a Record Ace, but don’t get me started on that.)BerlinMatt wrote: ↑22 Sep 2021, 5:20pm I think Raleigh may have made a lot of models for different export markets- in some markets brazing on the main tubes was frowned upon. The German example bears the “export” ***531*** decal, that was also used on the Gran Sport at this time.

Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
I reckon that is a Carlton, probably when Raleigh took over but kept brand etc
Re: Mystery frame time -a Raleigh?
The vendor has done some nice clear pictures of the lugs and you can make out the brake bridge and chain stay bridge.

This looks very similar to the Clubman, except for the mudguard eyes - 531 main tubes only.
Under the seat tube is this slightly “plasticine” looking joint, which my Argos also has.
