TV licensing...
Re: TV licensing...
A competent politician and government acting in the national interest would have a proposal for the future of public broadcasting rather than the current position of stating what won't happen. And would have explored the various possibilities and consulted on their advantages and disadvantages. Openly and with adequate time for different views to be expressed and considered.

^^^ this.
I gladly pay the licence fee and always have done.
Why?
Because I value the BBC's many TV and Radio stations for national, international and local news, weather, road reports.Drama, comedy, nature and archeological programs, sport, etc, etc.
All without the intrusion of adverts.
What we're seeing from this terrible government is the attempt of a gradual commercialisation of a public service of long standing, innthe same way the NHS is slowly being privatised for nothing more than profit for Tory party financiers.
Worst of all the stupid electorate can't see it!

A very funny show, made by the BBC.Ben@Forest wrote: ↑17 Jan 2022, 8:18amYou need this... I'd willingly stump up (£169?) if I could. Someone suggest giving the money to a charity but that misses the point.
There are many like me who watch without paying, some willingly some not.

Really? I guess it is a mix of an attempt to distract from the parties and revenge for reporting on them.
Very English/British Scandal, The Tourist, Around the World in 80 Days, Time, The Luminaries, Roadkill, Vienna Blood, and probably loads of stuff I've forgotten.De-funding the BBC to the point that all they'll be able to broadcast is game shows and the like ... will they care?
Admittedly it's been years, decades even, since the Beeb's glory days of the 1950s/60s/70s. Remember Forsyte Saga? Hancock's Half-Hour? War and Peace?
I have no love for the licence fee aka TV tax, but abolishing it before agreeing the replacement is cultural vandalism.

Re: TV licensing...
The move to get rid of the BBC is because the Tories see them as left wing and anti Tory.
I've always thought they managed to walk the tightrope pretty well.
The trouble is, shows mocking the government and their gaffs are very popular with the listeners/viewers and get labeled left wing.
This may be right but there is little else to laugh about .

I can't help feeling that the senior people at the BBC have been the organisation's own worst enemies. eg For long enough, they were happy to use well-publicised heavy-handed methods to rake in the licence fee, presumably in the misplaced belief that they would enjoy unending public support. Financing the BBC has come up before on here: I remember exchanges with Ben Lovejoy and I see he's not been active on here since 2010. Any support for that approach seems to have collapsed, hence Nadine Dorries is able to use it to justify her announcement. Being dependent on a licence fee fixed by the government seems to be the formula for dancing to the government's tune.

Re: TV licensing...
I'm anti what I see as the current compulsory subscription and have views subject to debate on alternative funding not requiring tax-payer money. But I think Nadine Dorries' announcement is more due to her being unhappy the BBC is not playing their part in supporting Johnson's rule. I've not seen polls of information on how the public regard the BBC subscription and the way they are enforcing it.thirdcrank wrote: ↑17 Jan 2022, 2:26pm I can't help feeling that the senior people at the BBC have been the organisation's own worst enemies. eg For long enough, they were happy to use well-publicised heavy-handed methods to rake in the licence fee, presumably in the misplaced belief that they would enjoy unending public support. I suspect (without evidence) that the removal or severe limiting the free licence for older people will have turned some attitudes anti licence fee.

Re: TV licensing...
I've just watched the BBC1 6pm news, presented by Sophie Raworth live outside 10 Downing Street. Boris Johnson on the point of resignation and Huw Edwards indisposed? Nope. A replay of today's PMQs with additional reporting and an outdoor interview with Laura Kuensberg. An interview with Huw Pym who was somewhere outdoors but not in Downing Street. Faisal Islam reporting from the waterside somewhere. A few clips of other news then winding up with a summary from Laura K amounting to speculation.
I presume all concerned get a financial perk for outside broadcasts. Value added = zero.

Re: TV licensing...
Laura K seems to have no job except speculation. She used to turn up in tandem with Katya Adler when Brexit and the EU in general were more in vogue, but Katya seems to be keeping a lower profile these days. Which is a shame. I always thought she was good as Daisy in Not Going Out.thirdcrank wrote: ↑19 Jan 2022, 6:37pm I've just watched the BBC1 6pm news, presented by Sophie Raworth live outside 10 Downing Street. Re: TV licensing...
Isn't it a bit naughty to split "licence fee" and "taxation" into two options as if they are different things? And it's worth remembering that YouGov's Conservative Party heritage (co-founded by the current Education Minister) probably influences who will answer them on a topic like this and who will give a sincere answer.Jdsk wrote: ↑19 Jan 2022, 5:32pmYouGov tracker: "How should the BBC be funded?"

Re: TV licensing...
Taxation is at least "progressive" to some degree, but TVL is a flat rate.
If you earn millions a year and live in a mansion, it is the same fee as if you are a single parent with a small income, living in a high-rise council flat.

Re: TV licensing...
Will you be renewing your TV licence when it expires Mick F or will the smart TV be boxed up and be living in the attic?
Then you'll be sitting there waiting for the reminders to arrive!

Re: TV licensing...
Smart TV?
It's a stupid TV. Not smart in the slightest.
The unit is ok and the screen is ok too, but the operation of the "smart" bit leaves a great deal to be desired.
Will she be renewing her TVL?
If it were up to me .......... NO.
