They said it was 'in competition' with the likes of Easyjet. Not sure how long it takes to get to airports, check in and fly, but the train takes 4½ hours. Doesn't sound too bad.

EDIT after reading website The radio said no railcards, but looking at the website, these can be used, but not for the discounted fares. The website also says that there are some connecting tickets available, but these are very limited. For me, when I book a ticket out of London, the ticket from my home to London is virtually free. Booking it on its own would add 10 or 15 quid.

Think of this as similar to a budget airline ticket, with their restrictions and you won't go far wrong.
I follow a YouTuber called Dylan’s Travel Reports, he did a comparison between flying and the train and there wasn’t much in it, time wise, door to door. He went from Edinburgh Castle to the Houses of Parliament, and back again. South by train and north by plane.

Germany are already there, Lufthansa has joined forces with DB to replace domestic flights with non-stop trains. Central Muenchen to central Koeln in less than 4 hours. Which considering that the airports are 40 mins from each city centre and there's minimal check-in time required at Munechen Hbf, is quicker than the flight.

There is a new train company starting between Edinburgh and that London;

A fair bit of determined effort will be needed to get those headline cheap fares:

......and now Rishi is halving air passenger duty for internal flights, making them even cheaper.

Interesting table of comparative prices in that article. This new company doesn't even beat LNER. Anyone for 10 hours on the bus?

That article doesn't make clear that the cheap seat fares have sold out and the £69 tickets are semi-flexible tickets that come without a booked seat.

The only determined effort is the usual: if you want cheap, book as soon as possible after tickets go on sale, usually 12 weeks ahead.

I’ve just read on Twitter that Lumo will not accept full size bikes on their services, only folded up folding bikes are allowed.

Jings. Thanks for flagging this. Not good at all. Who are Lumo? Which part of the timetable do they operate? Have they taken over from someone? Having read their website in search of these questions I am non the wiser! Bizarre.

If I check timetable for Perth to Newcastle it comes up with LNER (using the new Azumo carriage stock).

It might not last under the current name or ownership, FirstGroup buys and sell assets pretty frequently:

Thanks Jonathan.

So I can see they currently run 2 services per day, increasing to 3 then 5. These are in addition to LNER. LNER presumably remaining bookable for bikes. Phew. Tis a bit of a mess though.

Yes, LNER is still fine for bikes, and also has a (fairly?) new system on its website where it's possible to pick both your cycle space and your seat when you reserve them (so you can make sure that your seat is somewhere fairly close to the bike, rather than at the far end of the train): very nifty!

(A friendly guard the other day also told me that LNER is -- at last -- going to reconfigure the bike hooks on the Azumas, so it's slightly less of a challenge to fit a bike on them. Hopefully this doesn't also mean that they'll reduce the number of spaces, though...)

I'd be interested in any updates on this - have been avoiding East Coast because of lots of convincing sounding reports about problems.

Me too - as I don't have 30cm handlebars and 20mm tyres, I can't have both my wheel on the hook and my handlebars within the cabinet. My bike has to swing in to the vestibule making it impossible for the drinks trolley to pass.

The guard just said that they were going to refit them in the 'new year' -- a moveable feast...! (But I noticed on twitter yesterday that someone in Peterborough had heard the same thing, so hopefully there's something to it: https://twitter.com/PboroCycling/status ... 05794?s=20 )
