detour to Stonehenge

Post by peregrino »

Hello,

I will do the GB Divide (off-road) next month and I´m thinking in making a detour to see Glastonbury Tor and Stonehenge.

It is possible to ride near this two monuments?

Stonehenge has a byway that runs very close, and a footpath or permissive path that runs even closer, when we cycled the King Alfred Way the Hiviz wearing Marshall was happy to point out the path and let us walk our bikes along there.

It is possible to ride all around the foot of Glastonbury Tor using back lanes and a bit of the A361. However it will only be intermittently visible due to trees and folds in the ground. The most impressive views of it are from further away.

To park and walk up the Tor there are two options. The closest cycle parking rack is just inside the field where the public footpath over the Tor leaves Wellhouse Lane (just north-west of the Tor), but you have to wiggle through a gate to get at it. It is also possible to leave a bike in the yard behind the Rifleman pub by the junction of the A361 and Wellhouse Lane (do sample the local Wilkins cider while passing through) or if also visiting the Chalice Well to park there.

Water bottles can be filled in Wellhouse Lane at the overspills from the Red Spring (Chalice Well) and White Spring either side of the road.
