Threads reappearing as unread

Post by mjr »

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=128273 just appeared as 100% unread to me. What happened? Is it me?

No idea, sorry. It's not something anyone else has mentioned.

Sometime today, I merged a new topic, by Woodtourer, onto the the voluminous MAIN cycle.travel topic.

Maybe the unread new topic carries over into the result topic ? It looks like that might be your answer.

It just happened again. viewtopic.php?f=49&t=126499 went totally unread? Has that been merged?

Looks like a merge, topic title is different from the one given by the OP, seems to change between page 2 and 3. Whilst there has been a post today I don't know whether the merge is recent or not.

I think other threads get merged without this effect, so what makes these special?

It's happened again! viewtopic.php?p=1702309#p1702309

If it's not possible to stop this, would mods please stop merging new threads onto very old ones? It's not like it saves any resources, is it?

I utterly agree that we should stop merging new threads into old ones.
New people arrive all the time, but to stuff their posts onto threads that have gone back to "the olden days" is silly IMHO.

New conversations are new to new people and need to be treated as new.
Yes, refer to older/previous threads, but new posters do not need to be added onto old - and outdated? - threads.

And yet again, a read thread appears as all new. Please would mods stop this disruptive behaviour?

+1

I've made my views known on quite a few occasions.
I stand by my previous post on this thread.

And again, viewtopic.php?t=153722&start=90

Please could a moderator ask admin to disable the merge function?

Another thread mashed to Nashville, with my own posts appearing as unread to me. viewtopic.php?t=156555

pffft I bet it takes the Mods longer to do the (useful) job of merging, than it does us to click on them and realise it's an old topic.

If you want to moan at anyone, try the lazy people who post new topics without searching first.

Right, I'm off to ask what tyres peeps recommend ...

And today, people posting to an old topic (train travel) are seeing their own posts as "new" because the mods are splitting it into multiple topics.

Would the mods please like to advise clearly whether or when they'd like old topics continued or new topics started, rather than doing so much work merging and splitting which also degrades the user experience by making the "new posts" indicators almost useless? 😠

I am aware that it is not always completely clear when something deserves a new topic. This is, to some extent personal judgement.

In this case, I felt that the closure of ticket offices belongs in campaigning & public policy, rather than touring & expedition, and in addition, raises some important points not related to touring.

Another thread had been started, so I moved relevant posts to that thread.
