If you look at stuff I disagree outspokenly with it is, more often than not, what I see as undue certainty.

There is a difference between me saying something is black after someone else has said it is white, and me saying that something is probably some shade of grey after someone else has said it is black or white.

Lots of things tend to be grey areas and I prefer to qualify things that fall in to those with a bit more than "in my opinion".

Cripes, I've got a Good Companion too. Feeling rather old. No wonder I've now got a campervan and use hotels when touring.

Re the OPs original query, have you looked to see if there are any local tent repair places, or tarpaulin/boat cover makers. I would think it just needs a competent machinist.

As you're only changing the inner, and not the floor, a local alteration service may be fine. There are various outdoor fabric specialists that will sell midge netting, e.g. https://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/p1h-in ... search=net

leftpoole wrote: 24 Jun 2022, 3:41pm How about using your old Saunders every camp now until this time next year. All weekends, all weathers all year round. 26 weekends.
How about it? Is that what the OP is doing? Is that assumption the basis of advice that new would surely be better?
(If the camping profile fitted using it rather than my other tents, I'd use it for as long as I could, and if it needed replacing I'd replace it then, rather than assume I had to do it now)
leftpoole wrote: 24 Jun 2022, 3:41pm It is like saying any bicycle can take on the World. Yes any can, but it is much easier, much more pleasant and more free of breakdown to use for example a Thorn with a Rohloff..
Using that analogy, what you are saying to someone with a well-used but serviceable 1990s Galaxy who's wondering about a change of saddle for a long weekend's tour is that they should replace their bike with a Thorn/Rohloff. While it's a useful answer to some questions, it isn't necessarily a good answer to the one being asked.
leftpoole wrote: 24 Jun 2022, 3:41pm Will you finally agree to my point or will you just keep trying to annoy? (All whilst occasionally being seen cycling around err Dundee).
I guess if pointing out the importance of context repeatedly is annoying then I'll be annoying...

Good Idea.

There is, or was a tent maker in Newbridge on Wye in Powys.

I'll check and see if they are still there next time I pedal through that way.
Thanks for the suggestion.

EDIT: a quick google suggests was, rather than is.

The only mods will be to the inner doors which won't break any waterproof seals or go around awkward corners. You may need to supply the mesh you want, but that's easily available online. Find anyone doing clothing alterations/repairs locally and discuss what you want.

Yes indeed.
Or do it myself. I do have an old hand cranked sewing machine.
Does anyone know how fine the mesh needs to be to keep out the Scottish Midge ?

Something like 900 holes/ square inch.

And that's a lot finer than for mosquitos.

Not being familiar with the Space Packer, I did a search and the first thing that came up was this video of someone pitching one.

Absolutely priceless! That guy was surely destined to become the first tent erecting fatality.....

I'm not looking for another lightweight tent at the moment, but I'm always interested in improvements.

And the main reason that I'm not looking for another is that our 1979 Robert Saunders Base-Packer 2 is still doing the job. . .....
I always wonder why the spacepacker seems to be viewed more highly than the basepacker by cycle campers (relatively sheltered camping?), given that the spacepacker is basically still a transverse ridge but with the two uprights replaced by one curved pole, so with similar materials weight should be similar: for a significant advantage should the spacepacker not have its inner at 90 degrees to what it had, toavoid inner drooping on face?
Is a basepacker fly not faster to erect for a lunch stop?

I still have and use a Spacepacker. It's not so much other brands have left it behind as they've caught it up. I've finally stopped using it as a default solo walking tent as I use trekking poles and got a Hille Anaris, but that's no use on a bike.

In what way is a Spacepacker outdated?

although backingpackinglight.co.uk dont seem to stock it anymore but as they are the uk distributor, perhaps you could ask.

If our Base-Packer 2 doesn't see us out I'll have a look at that.
