There's a 'moving coloured picture' of an earlier Chater-Lea AA outfit, 30 seconds into this short film 'The AA Story'. Chater-Lea machines used a 'bought-in' Blackburne engine from what I read.
This looks like similar to the machine in rjb's photograph, but with what may perhaps be an oil pump bolted onto the outside of the crank case so a touch later in date.
I used to ride to work past the old Chater-Lea factory in Letchworth G.C, the original building from the '30's is still there.

You can still see the sign above the front door in this streetview shot.

Edit, this looks like the bike in rjb's photo, engine wise anyway

That's a wealth of info there. A lot to digest. I knew I could rely on you all. Chapter supplied the side valve engine up to 1936 and the AA were one of their main customers according to the info you found.
Thanks for all your help.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

I've just got back from Nepal and the number of Royal Enfields there was music to my ears!. I was told that most of the motor vehicles there are imported from India, where they are now made
