Vision Zero

Post by squeaker »

First heard the term in relation to traffic incidents at a presentation by WSCC's road safety lot (their idea was an underwhelming 25% reduction in KSIs by 2020).
Anyway, after some web searching I came upon this presentation on Sweden's impressive efforts. Love the street scene interpretation 8)
There was a recent UK conference the (presentations are here).
Food for thought?

I worry that the easy way to move towards zero cyclist casualties is to reduce cyclist numbers. We have had UK politicians boasting that we have a better record on cyclist safety than the Netherlands because we have fewer casualties per head. I think that exposure to the road needs to be included in the target. That is safety should be measured by cycle (or other) casualties per mile cycled, not per head of population.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Transport for London:

Cycle lane enforcement

From 27 June 2022, we may issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) to drivers for the following reasons:

• If you drive over the white line of a cycle lane when not permitted.
• If you stop or park in a cycle lane when not permitted.

“Protecting designated space for cyclists is essential in keeping them safe and improving confidence to cycle. We will start enforcing in key locations in London to deter drivers contravening the road rules."
