Beginner buying help

Post by T_Hardwick »

Forgive me if this isn’t allowed but I need some help choosing a bike. I’m a complete beginner so don’t know how to choose. I’ve found the following second hand, which I went for because I thought I’d get more for my money:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... 186338222/

If anyone with some experience can tell me more about each or which one seems best then I will be very appreciative.

Or if you think I’d be better off buying new, my budget is £500 absolute max but the cheaper the better really.

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi, they both (middle one had gone) look fine, but until you see them in the flesh, it will be hard to tell. The problem being you don’t know what abuse they suffered previously. I’d suggest checking the frame for cracks and dents, the wheels for damage and how smoothly they spin, ask to see the seat post and head set move, see if the cranks are secure and don’t ‘rock’ in their bearings. Finally, see if the tyres hold air and the brakes work. Then you could take it for a ride up & down the street to work the gears. Don’t think I’ve forgotten anything.

What use are you looking to put it to?
