Removing a wheel - what kind of nut is this?

Post by JamesHe »

The front and back wheel on my mountain bike are both secured with these nuts:

I haven't seen these before - can someone explain what tools I need to undo these?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

To answer your question, it looks like your wheels are secured with a security skewer. They sometimes use a special tool that comes with the skewer to release them. I couldn't tell you which make of skewer it is though, let alone what tool you need. If it is a security skewer and you don't have the tool, then I think you need to contact the person you got the bike from and see if they still have it.

Looks like the Trans-X type that come rebranded in a variety of names.
They do come in two sorts, standard alan key and security key. so try an alan key first, but if it isn't a good fit don't force it! If it's the security type, than as above try contacting he previous owner. If that fails, the good news is they're not that secure! It doesn't take much to come up with a way to remove them without the key, or alternatively buy another set and the key that comes with them is universal - At least the four sets I have, bought over the last 15 years and have different branding, share the same key

Thank you - it is a five sided key so the Trans-X looks right.

My sister gave me this bike and I'm sure she will have lost the key so I have ordered a new set!

Note that the rear skewer comes in 2 different length suitable for 130mm or 135mm dropout spacings.
If you are just after the 5 sided key either will be fine.

Not if it's the one I linked to, or any of mine:

Ah yes missed that, although they should change the title to match.
Does it need cutting down if used at the shorter end of the range?
