35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
Would a 35 mm tyre work on a Mavic MA2 rim?

Which brand of tyre do you have?
Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
I'd say a 35mm tyre on a MA2 rim would be too wide for the rim/give the tyre a hard time where it contacts the rim.
This would be compounded by the fact on a rear trike wheel the tyre would get a lot of sideways rolling stress when cornering.
Years ago there was a review of a recumbent (I forget the magazine and the recumbent). It had 2 front wheels and used Moulton tyres (and I guess rims as well). There was a photo of it cornering, showing the sideways force on one of the front tyres. Rather than being a "omega" shape like tyres tend to be, the tyre was more a quoate/upside down comma shape.
The photo caption was "Note the stress on Dr Moulton's tyre".
A more modern rim might give an easier tyre fit, my memory is that MA2/MA3 rims had fairly shallow internal wells, making tyres a hard fit - reminded by fitting a tyre on an MA3 rim the other week, which in turn reminded me of how lovely the polished anodized finish is on these rims.

Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
I used to run 28s on MA2 with no problems. Not sure if that is of any help though ?
As PT notes they are a fairly shallow rim and tyres where harder to fit.

You'll never know if you don't try it.
Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
I run the on narrow Alex race 28 no problem how wide are ma2 rims??
Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
It's going to need some measuring:
Take the inner rim width as shown on the diagram here https://www.schwalbe.com/en/reifenmasse >> Which tire (sic) fits which rim?
Feed it into the ETRTO tyre/rim chart and see if your tyre is in range (read the notes on pressures, rim styles, hookless, etc)

BITD when first getting into day rides rather than loaded touring, I rode 32s on MA2.
I didn't enjoy it and settled on Mod4 shod with 32s or 35s instead.

I remember mountain bikers using reconfigured Ma40’s (posh Ma2’s) supposedly giving more comfort because of the bulging side wall that happens. How it went??????

Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
I kept a copy of CJ's CTC webpage on tyre sizes. He recommended a maximum tyre width ot 2.2 times rim inner width. So if your rim inner width is 13.5mm (the MA2 width I found on the internet) then the max tyre width is 30mm. (A nominal 32 might be a true 30, of course.)
Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
Thanks for all the input ladies and gents.
Re: 35 mm tyre in an MA2 rim
Never used MA40’s for an MTB but mine has 23mm Mavic rims and 50mm tyres. This is just about the 2.2x mentioned above. I have never experienced any handling problems but the bulge makes cantilever brake set-up a real chore. Because of this I converted to parallel push hydraulic rim brakes years ago.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.
