Please use that thread for the impact on touring, and this one for helmet arguments. Thanks.

From road.cc

From January 2023, cyclists in Cyprus will have to wear a helmet after the country’s parliament passed an amendment to the Bicycles Law last month.

According to the amendment, helmets will soon be mandatory for anyone cycling on the island’s roads, bike paths, cycle corridors and cycle lanes, as well for any passenger carried in a special bike seat.

Under the new law, offenders will face a €50 for failing to comply, while the Registrar of Motor Vehicles has been given the authority to approve or reject helmet types.

Chrysis Pantelides, the MP who initially proposed the amendment, argued that there has been an increase in road traffic collisions involving cyclists, and that a mandatory helmet law could potentially save riders from serious injury or death.

You'd think someone would find out whether it does first.

Heh.

The problem is the weasel wording. It's very hard to argue with "could potentially ..."

I mean banning lizards as pets from urban areas "could potentially ... "

Apart from posting for others info, I was interested in this because I had thought of Cyprus for a winter getaway.

It had the added bonus of not being in Schengen , but I think it is joining soon.

So, bye, bye Cyprus.

When it comes to politicians deciding on evidence based public health interventions... Are you familiar with "the war on drugs"?
Often seen riding a bike around Dundee...

How do they enforce it in all four zones?
The native Cypriot area
Turk occupation area
U.N. occupation area
British occupation area

The Cyprus Police is legally-recognised as covering the whole Republic of Cyprus. The main stations are: Kyrenia P.D., Morfou P.D., Paphos P.D., Ammochostos P.D., Larnaka P.D., Limassol P.D. and Nicosia P.D.
The Sovereign Base Areas Police Service does what it says on the tin and covers the bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia including HM Prison.
You might be okay in the Base Areas because they use some UK law, but...

At least that's an honest statement. Thank you.
