Slim 24" tyre help please
Slim 24" tyre help please
I`m looking for some 24 inch narrow tyres, 24 x 1 would be fine, for `junior racer` type use. So far I`ve only got those already on the rims, Schwalbe. Half an hour searching online seems to throw up Kenda as an alternative. The only Schwalbes for sale are actually wheelchair tyres, and though they have the benefit of puncture protection are priced at around £33!
If you have any suggestions or even have a pair for sale please let me know,
Thanks, Julian

julianm: I'm no expert but Spa (and others) sell the Airnimal Joey Sport with Panaracer Pasela 520 x 25c (on 520 rims). Are you looking for the right tyres? What rim size is it?

nominally 24" tyres can sit on rims with a bead seat diameter (BSD) of 507, 520 or 540mm. It is important that you know which rim you have! The rim BSD is part of the ETRTO designation, and is the figure listed in brackets for each category here;

I'm guessing that you are looking for 25-520 or 25-540 tyres

If it is the dreaded 600A then I suspect the Hutchinsons from SJS cycles are going to be your only option.

Which also says something about Decathlon selling bikes that one is supposed to use until the tyres wear out, if I'm right in thinking this. May be true in lots of cases though, even before the tyres wear out ...

Re: Slim 24" tyre help please
Hello & thanks as usual for all the advice. Having got out a magnifying glass I`ve found the rim size marked as 541 x 13c with a further 420c on the sticker. It also has a website! It`s French! The rims are French! AAARRGGGHHH!
www.mach1.fr which led me to find
600A 541 x 13C 18 - 28 450 g 518
for a similar looking rim, so dreaded 600A it is!
The current tyres are 25-540, which are a very tight fit, so it wouldn`t surprise me if they were a bit undersized for the rims.
I`ll at least know what I`m looking for now I suppose - is a search for 600A tyres how I proceed?
Thanks again, Julian

Hutchinson catalogue lists only 37-541 tyres AFAICT. But they do make wheelchair ones in 25-541 size (not in their bike catalogue....)
Maybe another set of 25-540 are not such a bad idea after all.
cheers

Re: Slim 24" tyre help please
I'm not clear if you want an exact replacement for what's already fitted, or if you are hoping to find something slimmer. As I'm always posting, Schwalbe come as near as humanly possible to doing all the tyres in all the sizes. I've just had a look at their UK website and I can't find a download of their main catalogue. I don't know if that's a technical glitch or a policy decision to stop UK customers pestering retailers for stuff that's manufactured but they can't be bothered to stock.
Schwalbe wheelchair tyres are the same as their cycle equivalents, but without any raised markings on the sidewalls to affect the hands of wheelchsair users. If the size you want is in the wheelchair catalogue, I think a version is almost certainly made for bikes, but not necessarily available easily in the UK.
Unless anybody comes up with a recommendation, you need your existing tyre size rather than the rim size and google. I've found St John Street Cycles has been a good source for hard-to-find sizes. It may be that a specialist recumbent stockist has what you need.
BTW, if you want something a bit slimmer than what's on now, it's the smaller ertro number that denotes the width of the tyre.
(Brucey beat me to it.)

Re: Slim 24" tyre help please
I just checked the schwalbe 2012 catalogue and they do several different 540 fitments but none in 541.
My guess is that the 540s may fit OK unless they are unusually tight. Bit of a punt though.
cheers

When I had this dilemma a few years ago,
These Hutchinsons
were not available, now they are and you should grab some quick because when they are gone it may be Horizon's option of throwing the bike away!

Re: Slim 24" tyre help please
I know it is resurrecting an old thread but I wasn't having much luck in my search for 24" (507) 'road-ish' type tyres for the youngest daughters bike.
The majority of offerings were ultra chunky MTB tyres, or the Schwalbe 'plus' range at 1.5 kgs per pair.
However, Holland Bike shop seem to have a good selection at reasonable prices. Pity about the shipping costs, although if you're ever in the Netherlands you could bring a slack handful back. https://hollandbikeshop.com/en-gb/bicyc ... ch/?page=1
Perhaps someone looking for smaller tyres may find this thread addendum of interest!! Any other recommendations welcome - for a lightweight, fast rolling, cheapish road orientated (plus occasional light tracks) tyre. Not so worried about puncture proofness.
