Bottom bracket creak NOT!

Post by Gearoidmuar »

Modern carbon fibre framed 29er with thru axles develops prominent creak standing up. Cassette appears tight. Axles cleaned, no difference. Must be creaking BB.
Take to bikeshop here in Spain. No!
Diagnosed by Jesus, the owner of Bike Fabrik Lepe, a terrific bike shop as broken freehub body. Replaced. Bike now totally silent.
Never heard of such and I was an early adopter of the cassette. Never broke an axle in one.
Freehub bodies can crack.

Glad it's fixed.

Thanks for that... yet another where the sound was coming from somewhere unexpected! And a useful reminder for the next victim.

Wow - that's a new one!

Are you gonna name-n-shame the brand+model?

Was it an aluminium alloy freehub body or steel?

Not sure. Didn't examine it. Bike Merida big nine 4000 from 2016. Shimano hubs according to specs though unmarked.
The difference on cycling is amazing since the repair. Big is running noticeably faster.

Thanks.
They don't sound like Shimano's finest.

Fingers crossed you never get this again - and hopefully no-one else will!

Shimano stuff cracks too. A friend has had two Shimano cranks crack. I've only had shimano freehubs since they came out. First problem one.

Re: Bottom bracket creak NOT!..a follow up

After a couple of days a creak came back. I identified the cause. Left pedal screws were slightly loose. Tightened the hell out of them. Then a day later another creak. Did trick Sebastian did in bike shop. Held bike with left hand and forced wheel side to side. It creaked. Five seconds to fix this. The rear thru axle wasn't tight enough. Totally silent again. One of those tightened by a cam lever.
That test is REALLY USEFUL TO KNOW.

I had an all Carbon bike which made the most terrible creaking when putting any effort in. After weeks of investigation and tightening every possible component, stripping and regreassing everything, I finally took the seat post/ saddle out of the frame and lo and behold, a tiny 1cm crack in the underside body of the saddle. Giant own brand saddle, now consigned to the dustbin!

There's no end to it!
Had an infuriating creak on a tour. A bikeshop couldn't find the cause. I eventually did. Rear skewer was too tight. Loosened it a little. End of problem!
